My son and I are looking at a 1972 Road Runner to purchase. Car is a project . My question is looking at the pictures, drivers side has original quarter panel. I see 4 holes for emblems. But when I look on line for pictures its hard to see what's there. I see they put GTX on quarters but I would think its only 3 holes. I see Road runner with a road runner decal before it on some pictures. guessing that's what's suppose to be there. but when I look at other pics on line I see nothing. What option drives to have that emblem there or not? Any other major items I should look at being the car is apart ? hate to bring home a truck load of parts and find were missing key items to 72 that are costly. thanks for any help.

I see it on some Road Runners but not all. Wondering why they all didn't have the emblems on the quarters. he said he has a nice grille. Going to make a list of parts we should see.thanks

Your caution is justified. They are way cool cars, but are almost impossible to find some parts for.

Good luck!

Their will be 4 holes in the quarter panel . Two holes for the "road" emblem and two holes for the "runner" emblem .
ALL 1972 Road Runners will have the quarter panel name plates .

'72 was the last year for pinned Road Runner badging, switched to "stick-on" name plates thereafter.

From whay I have read on this site about dash pads is that Just Dashes is the place to go, but they are not cheap.

Also another item to consider is the upper door panels as they are hard to find in good used condition. There is a base plain upper and a deluxe upper for roadrunner in 72.

One more item, tail light lenses

Make sure the grill is actually a 72 RR or GTX grill not a satellite grill thats $2500.00 if you can find one. Also the header panel bezels are re-popped but are another expensive item.

This is inaccurate, 72 Road runner grill is the expensive piece, GTX and Satellite use the same grill.
Also I paid $100 for the Road Runner header Bezel from BE+A.

Ron if you read it the way he wrote it he is saying the 72 RR/GTX grill is the expensive part. FYI a 72 RR with the GTX package uses the 72 RR grill not the 71-2 Satellite grill.

As I get closer to closing a deal on this car I'm getting a little nervous. Help me out on this WIW of this car. Don't want my kid to be upside down in this thing. Original car was a 72 400- 3speed. bench seat, black car. motor trans long gone. has fender tag, and build sheet. As the car sets now. Rolling shell had a quarter panel put on it and a pass inter fender. body from pics other was pretty clean. Coming with deal, seats already done, nice grille, parts car satellite Sebring missing a few things. Super stock springs, new door handles, wiring harness for under hood, 440 with a 4 speed( late 76-78's 440).pretty much I guess to make a complete car. nothing really big to me. so throw a WIW for this thing. should we just wait and find a stick car that is complete and then do a resto ? he's in college but loves old mopars.

unfortunately 71 and up B bodies don't bring big $$$$.

in my opinion. non air grabber, bench seat, no original motor and trans. it would be worth worth mid 20's when done to high driver quality standards.

low resale values could be considered good or bad , depending on how you look at it.

the good. you can build it how you want without much worry about "if I modify it will it hurt it's value". original motor and trans wouldn't be worth more than the 440 4 speed you are getting to install. a lot of people would prefer it with the 440 4 speed than the original 400 3 speed.

the bad. a quality pro paint job might get you upside down in value.

If you can get a deal on it, and you've inventoried what's there...

Might be worth a hard look...

Parts are scarce(and pricey)for a fuselage body...

You have a hard decision to make, but here is what I am learning as I do an ebody. You and your son shouldn't consider your time as a cost because your going to have to put 100's of hours into it. Buy the best you can afford, I have a bad habit of only going with the cheapest part. So I've gotten to buy several things more than once. People will sell you stuff that may fit but it sure doesn't look right. As you progress, the nicer it starts looking the more you want to do. Parts that were good enough when you started wind up being replaced. I don't want to be all negative though, I and a good friend are having a ball doing my car. Its what I've always wanted and the satisfaction of doing what you can by yourself weighs against the cost. You and your son will have memories and time together you can't put a price on. 72 was the lowest production number year so your going to have something not a lot of people have and that should increase the value in the long run. At most shows there are none at least here in the southwest. What ever you figure the cost to be I would add 25%, as a first timer your going miss stuff. Thats my opinion. Let the bashing begin.

If you are going to put a 4 speed and a bench seat together, you know that the parts to do it (floor hump, shifter set-back, shift levers, boot) are unique to that car and combination and are therefore nearly impossible to find.

Can you be SURE that most or all of the difficult parts are there and usable? Again, there are great cars. But there is a long list of stuff for them that is either non-existant or very expensive.

My thoughts are that if is a rolling shell that still needs body and paint. And has a late model smog engine. And if you do not know the quality of the engine, tranny, diff, brakes, etc. I would say maybe $5,000 without seeing any pics.

One last question, how familiar are you with these cars? You are getting a major basket case with this, so knowing what is NOT there is real important. And then figuring out where and how everything goes can be daunting. There are a lot of things very different about these cars than their predecessors.

I love them. Have resto'd several. But will not do another one. Just too many unobtainiums with them.

If you are worried about being upside down
Then move on.
take it from someone who has 2 71 rr
These cars are not easy to restore
They have A bunch of Hard to find parts
The cost of parts are
Just as expensive or more then a e body.

be prepared to flush 500 at a time
And to repeat this many times!
you better really love the car or
You will soon be hatin on it fast.

You may also want to consider ABC. His dashes are really nice.
