Buying a truck off a friend of mine. 92 Dodge 4x4. been sitting for years. he lost the keys. Some what's the best way to get this thing on my trailer? pop the transfer case in neutral is how I'll get it to roll.but now how do I steer it?? thought I would tear column apart but didn't really want to waste a lot time. Any suggestions?? automatic on the column. thanks

I'm assuming the door locks take the same key as the ign (if so) you might pull a door panel & take the lock cyl out & take it in & have a key cut for it. either that or pull the st wheel to get to the innards underneath & unlock the steering

Pull the switch out of it. Might take 3 minutes if your slow. All you need is a small set of torx screw drivers and a small set of tamper proof torx screw drivers. Pull the tilt handle if it has tilt, 2 torx screws that hold the bottom cover on, then pull the top piece off and then the tamper proof torx screws and it out. Reach in a turn with a screw driver

Bring your friend that owns the truck with you to the local Dodge dealership parts department. Have him bring the title or registration to the vehicle along with personal ID. Have the key cut to code based on the vin.

It cost around $25 to have the Dodge dealer cut a key with proof of ownership.

With a truck, trailer and winch, you really shouldn't need a key. With a tow strap you can drag the truck where it needs to be, then winch it up the trailer. Have used plywood boards and a floor jack to lift vehicles to pivot them sideways. Have used wood planks greased up with dish soap to slide tires to pivot vehicles. Lots of ways it can be done.

A socket set, small compressor and an air hammer and I suppose you could disconnect the steering shaft if you wanted to.

sounds like you are wanting to get it to its new home ASAP. If it is on concrete & you have some skates that'd work or at least jack up the front wheels off the ground each time you need to move the wheels (If you do disable the st col shaft) several times as you tow it back & forth till you can get it lined up enough to be towed. If there ain't no rush then I would do the key deal as said cuz you're gonna need that sooner or later. I hope its a good deal for you

You should have read the FIRST response. Take the door panel off and pull the lock cylinder.

Pulling the switch is easier than the door panel!

With the older trucks you just disconnect the wiring harness that goes up the steering column and then plug in a new harness with a cylinder. I used to have a spare column harness with a cylinder and key and I could start up any truck in just a few seconds by plugging in my spare harness.

I just removed the door lock and took it to the locksmith, $16.00 later I had a ignition key that worked.

it's ok to butt heads, just don't do it with a butthead
