After my garage fire I dug out some rechromed bumpers and valve covers that I want to remove the fire soot off of. I searched high and low on the internet and used every chemical that I know of and cannot find anything or any process to remove the garbage without hurting the chrome. Anyone know of such an animal? shruggy

There is a product used in the aircraft industry to remove exhaust soot from fuselages. Maybe google it. Or go on Aircraft Spruce website - they probably have it.

X2 on Nev R Dull. The best polish for chrome I've ever come across. Great for aluminum and brass too.

0000 steel wool. It won't hurt thick chrome on a bumper. It works great on cleaning up emblems too.

Tried every chemical I have in stock including lacquer thinner, Flitz, methel ethel ketone, acetone, and various over the counter mitures with no success. If I use 0000 steel wool it damages the finish, especially on newly chromed bumpers I tried it on. mad

If 0000 is damaging your chrome you have some bad chrome or the fire damage is beyond repair

Chrome wheel cleaner, purple stuff, spray-nine. The spray-nine worked better than the wheel dust cleaner on my neglected wheels so I tried on my bumper(diesel soot) cleaned up nicely.

I will try the Never-dull next. I can't use 0000 on factory valve covers that is for sure. tsk I have 5 sets that were hanging on nails on the garage wall, they almost look black powder coated... whiney

I have no experience removing fire soot from chrome, but I have done lots of polishing for years now.

I have used never dull and many of the others over the years. When I did smaller stuff like my bikes I used never dull lot's, good stuff. I bet I still have some on the shelf right now along with 3-4 others too. Been siting there for years since I started using Autosol.

Soak your dried up never dull in my autosol and you'll think you died and went to heaven...lol

IMO its the best stuff going, I buy it in 6-1 quart cases from Eastwood. Believe it or not they were the best deal going that I could find on a larger quality like that. I use it at work to polish tanker trucks= no easy deal.

I know this stuff blows never dull away with or without the cotton gauss.
This is at home on my back porch. I paint it on the aluminum and buff it off, kicks azz.

This is what I polish, in minutes and none of it by hand, all buffers.

My 49' race trailer had lots of bright finishes on it.

If my buffer and autosol can't take it off, then it ain't coming off. MY twocents

I have polished my brains out over the years. I used to wash this truck and trailer from the roof down 2 twice per month all through the race season, it was usually spotless, dirty in this picture at the mopar nationals, rained on the way up.

Are you sure the chrome hasn't been discolored by heat?

The rough black stuff should come off with just about any decent cleaner.

If you are down to smooth metal finish and still have a discoloration, it could be from the heat of the fire and that is likely there to stay, short of re-chroming.

As a last ditch effort, you could try an acid based metal brightener like they use at commercial truck washes.

I have been able to use major elbow grease and get down to the chrome, but I am looking for an easier way. I do have access to commercial chrome brightener, I will try that next. up

I know you said that you tried every available chemical, but did you try oven cleaner? Try heavy duty easy off. Spray it on and when it dries in a half hour or so spray it again. Wait five minutes and wipe with a paper towel or a cloth. Should come off. As long as you are not doing any aluminum or pot-metal parts you should be good. Be sure to rinse well with water when you are done, and wear gloves! If you decide to try this let us know how well it works for you. I have used heavy duty easy off to remove old grease and carbon from just about everything.
