if you have access to a soda blaster just get them blasted. soda will do nothing on chrome but will get rid of all the cooked on stuff.
no effort. been there done that.

Try white scotch brite(not grey) with charcoal lighter fluid. Its better if you wrap the parts in HD plastic and let sit for several days. After that, use the white scotch brite soaked with the fluid. Works well.

I second the Autosol - that stuff rocks !!! . . . so here is something I learnt from an "old" Chrome shop guy years ago - they make a solution of "Bon Ami" cleanser, then wipe down the newly chromed bumpers and let it dry to a haze . . . wipe the haze off and totally new !! I have done this on the bumpers on my 74 Duster360, and it takes everything off the chrome but the shine !!!

The acid your talking about is for aluminum only, it's not for chrome. I use the acid too on certain finishes, NOT polished finishes.
