Thank You to Chuck and Pete / Best Machine

Just wanted to fill eveybody in on my Dyno Day at Best Machine. Was never a guy to pay for Dyno time, I'm really luckey to just have a couple toys so to me Dyno time was an option that I've never used before.

Dropped off my 340 to Best Machine on thurs. Friday was dyno day and when I got there my engine was all in place and ready to go. Tried to go over everything as best as I could so no problems, well had an oil pump blueprinted and bench checked I know bearing clearance plays a huge roll in oil pressure but sent the the pump out to be blueprinted and to make sure I didnt end up with crazy oil pressure anywhere between 50-65 I was ok with. First sign was when we pre primed engine pressure went up to around 80 not what I wanted but we decided to break engine in. Upon fireup the engine was shut down in 3 seconds had 192 pounds of oil pressure, I thought that has to be wrong, gauge something took a look at the oil filter and it was ballooned. Not good!!! didnt need this on the dyno.

After talking about our options we decided to pull the pan and replace the pump. Pete was on the Phone locating me a pump Chuck and Dave Dudek (Thanks Dave!) Rolled up there sleeves and we pulled the pan while Pete dropped what he was doing to purchase and deliver my pump and help me get my Problem solved. We got everything buttoned up , best helped with everything , gaskets , sealer, oil they rolled out the red carpet to make things happen for me!

Day turned around and went great! 62 pounds of oil pressure. Engine made great power, no leaks and we dyno' a few diffrent carbs/fuel and timing changes, couldnt have went better.

Long story longer if your on the fence about paying for Dyno time , this saved me from having to pull a pan in the car, it saved me from any possible engine damage by catching the pressure problem so fast there was no damage or burst oil filter mess, this also gave me piece of mind that when I painted and detailed my engine there was no leaks going into the car, it was dialed in and ready to go, sure might have to make a few small changes due to full exhaust in car but its real close going in, also when the engine went in the car I knew cam was broke in and there was no problems. After saving all the labor of doing this in the car and the piece of mind of knowing that "its right" carb jetting was spot on ,plus knowing where peak TQ and horsepower is for shifts and also being able to select my torque converter due to having the data . What a deal !!!

Dyno room at best is spotless/clean, Pete and Chuck provided all tools, gaskets/sealers,oil, locating and delivery service of the oil pump and jumped right in to help me straighten out everything. These guys were not only accommodating, they went the extra mile to make it happen!!!

Thanks Best Machine Pete/Chuck...........I'm sold on Dyno Time saved me lots of frustrating labor...........Paul M Petcou

Pete and Chuck have both been great to work with and I would highly recommend them to anyone looking for an engine shop.

So what does a pure stock 340 make for hp these days? I assume somewhere around my FAST motors?

The last two 1971 NHRA legal stocker 340 motors I built, the first one made 420 HP with the pistons hitting the eyebrows on the J heads and the other motor with the X heads made 430 HP not hitting anything shock whistling Gene Buehls 1971 legal 340 motor(it held the NHRA E/SA record for two years after the dyno work) made 450 HP on the same dyno whiney shruggy SB will make power shruggy

Pure stock is pushing that much?? I thought the pure stock 340 cars like dusters were in the low 13 to high 12 area at best. They have to have stock cam, rockers, Unported heads intake correct? FAST is a different story I think they are in the 480 to 550 hp area ? Don't follow NHRA but didn't they refactor the 71 340 at 310hp?

Sure. You figure a couple of the Pure Stock hemis are around 600+hp to run their times, the same rule interpretation applied to a 340, and I would imagine somewhere near/over 400hp is possible. It is amazing how creative everybody can get interpreting the rules. I know there are a few 71 a bodies coming out, and I cant wait to see how they go.

I visited BEST last month while in Detroit and they were hard at work on a new engine setup that will probably set the world afire.
The Dyno room was spotless and pro-built.

Good set of guys.

Brian, at 125 (buck&quarter) really doubt that horsepower is anywhere near your F.A.S.T engines, thats some serious smoke!

Demon, Purestock has evolved over the years and there are liberties given in the rules, 1.5 points over advertised compression, X/H pipes, 2.5 inch exhaust NHRA valvejobs/engine blueprint specks ect all this equals more horsepower.

Scotty, would love to go to MIR its always a great time hanging out with everybody, dont know if its possible this time around. Setting that smallblock Purestock record would be really Tuff!!! Owen Simpson owns it !!! That yenko duce or the COPO nova is really a wicked package, cars light, that LT1 makes some serious Power and most of all Owen can really yank some gears/drive & Both Owen&Eric can tune those Chevys!!! No doubt team Canada has really raised the bar!!!

Mopar Dave spent the day at the Dyno, (whole day) with the oil pump issue and then tested a couple fuels , turbo blue, VP,timing, and jetting and I had a few carbs I wanted to test.(lunch) Chuck was very helpful with jetting & timing recommendations, to get me to where I wanted to be fairly quick. Best to call Chuck and Pete to get a price on Dyno time, they ran a Moparts dyno deal during the summer and thats when I committed, the price at that time was 500.00. Gotta tell you money well spent for me, caught the possible problems , everything got detailed and painted without leaks, and what I like best is that I only had to do it once, the frustration and possible bugs got worked out before engine went in the car.

Man , that Mr Sixpack is one photogenic guy never a hair out of place and never ages that guy!!!

RS23U,

We did run at Stanton this year, always a great time! The weather did hurt the car count and we did get a little rain on Sat. Think 106 cars this year.

Mopar Dave Compression is 11:8 and I tried turbo blue out of the pump, everybody keeps telling me its inconsistence so tried some VP 110 also and found nothing. Timing it like 34 deg total.

Cab, I do remember Genes car long time ago, we were playing with Thermos then (1995) he made big power for that time. Think they liked tearing Gene down regularly!

The Pope was just in NY, DC and Phila... Didn't realize engine machine shops in MI would receive a papal visit as well. That little 340 has been blessed
