So my car has been sitting for a while but seemed to run really good when I first started it up. Took it for a drive and it developed a lifter tick. At least I thought it was so I added some mystery oil to it to see if it would help and took it out for ride and it kept ticking but didn't quite sound as bad. Last night I started to take it for another spin and I thought I blew an exhaust gasket. So I limped it back home. Got it home and popped the hood and I can almost heAr the sound through the carb. It's like a popping metal sound. Put my hand on the motor and I can feel it hitting. I know not much to go on. The motor is a 318 in my 70 challenger.

Probably best to pull the VC's and plugs. Roll it over a little at a time and check valve operation and look for any extra sloppiness in the rockers when valves are closed.

Sounds like a push rod came out and is lying in the valley. I have had this happen, no idea how it happens, but it sounds terrible. Take the valve cover off and it will be obvious which one it is.

Hope this helps.

Agree with all of the above...could be a push rod if it's not a new build... luck
possibly a camshaft if it is... fan

If you dropped a push rod the lifter will be tossed out of the bore and you'll lose oil pressure to the top end of the engine.

Been there. Done that.

Could also be a bent push rod. Had the samething happen to me. Bent just enough to rattel but not fall out. You may have to pull them to see what one(s)bent. I could not see mine even spining it in place, had to lay them on the bench to find it.

It could be just a collapsed lifter, Had that happen before on a new 383 Roadrunner.

it's ok to butt heads, just don't do it with a butthead

iagree Hopefully not luck I would eliminate all the other causes first and then look real hard at the top of the lobes for unusual wear patterns. I've have two different cams go flat in the same motor this summer, back 4 lobes on the first one and now 2 or 3 lobes on the front of the cam after less than 100 miles, both where broken in correclty with zinc additve and so on runaway puke Changing brands on the third one this wekend luck

You do have oil pressure, right?
I'd pull the valve covers and take a look, I've had a few bent pushrods the have been spit out into the valley, and I've seen a few poke a hole in the rocker arm.

Just in case everything looks OK there, do you have a automatic trans? Maybe a loose torque converter bolt is hitting on the block.
318s are pretty tough, it takes a pretty good effort to hurt one. Gene
