I'm at the point that I need to pick up tires for a mini tubbed 67 Belvedere. Expecting 550-600hp and a 4 speed. Looking for something near in size to the 315 60/15. Some tires are listed for automatic transmissions only. Recommendations?

Myself and others beat our heads against the wall trying drag radials with manual trannies. Even with fully adjustable suspensions they are very tricky. They can technically be faster, but theyre very inconsistent. We've had good luck with MT ET street bias blys and Hoosier quicktime DOT Pros. I drove my car a bunch with both types (35 mile round trip to work), and both kinds (bias plys and radials) wore at about the same rate. Shouldnt drive in any moisture with either tire. Best street psi for a heavier car with the bias ply street slicks was about 25psi.

If its a drag only car go with the bais ply M&H's. I run my e-body on the street with Nitto Drag Radials 325-50/15's.

They hook up great on the street, last for over 10 k or 2 years, are rated at 186 mph and wont normally pick up stones etc. They will not dead hook in 1st though, and can be driven in the rain with care. The sheer size of the tires make them prone to hydroplane in a decent rain at freeway speeds.

I also run them (275-60-15's) on my automatic a-body, and they will dead hook on the street once warm with perfect conditions, otherwise they will still spin. I run them both at 18psi.

Don't fear the radials with a manual trans, consistent clutch control is the key. If you have that, a manual trans launch can be even smoother than a typical launch with a converter.

Here's how that is possible... a manual with a properly slipped clutch can allow launching on straight engine torque alone. With an automatic, the converter initially multiplies engine torque to some extent, which creates a surge of torque just off the line. Even though that surge is short duration, it generally dictates a less efficient tire choice and more robust drivetrain, both of which slow you down a bit for the entire rest of the run. That short term initial surge of torque is more than offset by a less efficient overall setup.

I had planned on running Radials and wasn't aware of the inconsistency issues when running with a 4 speed. The car will primarily be used on the street with an occasional trip to the track. Unlikely to be driven if there's much chance of rain. I found an article HERE that I thought was useful as well.
