The darker color ( its actually a deep chocolate color ) is correct for 71 Cuda.
I've seen the silver one used on some C-bodies, and I believe the later year Cudas.

Yep! What Terry said. Also, FWIW, the reproductions are a poor attempt. The originals were a chromed pot metal bezel with a multi layer laminated graphics insert. It would be a very difficult part to reproduce to a high standard. The last NOS one I bought cost over $500.00 back around 2006. iagree

The silver ones are for non-'cuda cars. Terry, which C Body cars came with this nameplate?

The silver ones are for Barracudas and the flat black ones are for Cuda. They become "brown" when the sun have faded the emblem. You can see the black finish on NOS ones..

I have an NOS Cuda one in the package, and it is definitely flat black (Scott, you got yours for a great price compared to what I had to pay........). I've seen the chocolate colored ones on cars, and I always thought it was that color from the elements and time getting to that chocolate color. The repops just don't have the same finish to them, even the pot metal looks bad.

Too bad someone out there can't restore the original ones if there's no pitting of the pot metal. I always wondered how did the factory originally make these things in the first place?

I don't remember the name of the process but new technology has made it obsolete and to the best of my knowledge it no longer exists. It was basically an embossed foil with a colored layer over it, and a final layer of clear protective film which was all molded together forming a super thin multi layer sandwich. Other modern laminating techniques could be used today to produce a similar result but I haven't seen it done yet.

BTW, the very same chromed pot metal bezel style was used for MANY years in various Mopar applications, from Hemi Cuda's to Dodge trucks, all that varied was the insert.

Same tyle bezel but the attaching pegs were eliminated and replaced with an adhesive strip

I believe this is an NOS one missing the packaging. Got it a couple weeks ago. You can definately see that it is semi flat black. Pretty cool and tough to duplicate I'm sure.

Yes.. I'm asking a lot but I would take a little less for it. I have another one that is not NOS but really, really nice.

Both are actually sold now.

Yup, these are not poor quality parts for sure. I paid closer to $700 for mine, but it is NOS in the package -- and there is a HUGE difference in the repop to NOS parts quality -- it's not even close. These by Plymouth pieces are out there, but not a lot of NOS pieces for sure.
