The Gremlin looks like a wild ride! If it would have stayed straight, he would have had that camaro covered

He finished up his summer of playing with the Gremlin, running a best of 8.81-149, then whisked it off to the chassis guy, to remove the bent R&P support, and rebuild the front end. Upon removal of the pieces, It was discovered that the damage to the oil pan was more than he had originally assessed.

Boone, and the Barnyard Viper

Like all old farm trucks, the Barnyard spends most of it's time out in the weather, completely ignored until it's time to be put to use.

The first outing after Drag Week 2014 was a trip to Tulsa Raceway Park in November for their "Mopars at the Park" event.
Boone managed to back up his killer 11.11-118.86 on the last day of Drag Week with a best of 11.13-119.20.

Dale borrowed the Truck a few weeks later to drive it to a season ending get together with his "Tulsa list" buddies.

Darren borrowed the Truck also, to drive to work, and show off to his co-workers. After both of these outings, the brothers reported to Boone that the Barnyard had developed a vibration in the rear of the Truck, and he really needed to figure out what was going on.

Since the ole Dodge runs on bias ply ET Streets with no tubes, Boone's initial inspection before his next cruise was the tire pressure...Right side 18lbs, left side 9lbs!
"Your brothers are idiots!" He relayed to me as he drove along in the truck with no vibration after setting both to 20.
"If you just came to that conclusion today, you are no better!" I shot back.

The poor girl then sat through the winter, outside, with only a bag over the breathers, which occasionally got blown off, until late March, when it became time to prepare for the Mopars invade Mokan race. When Boone went to fire up the 508 from hibernation, it made a quarter revolution and locked up. He pulled the plugs, let all the rain water drain out, then lubed the cylinders and fired it off.

The 140 mile cruise to MoKan Dragway, with a load of swap meet parts in the trailer went by without any problems, and he collected an 11.03-120 for his effort.

You are correct Jay! With 2 and 1/4 headers, the 508 bellows when the twin 750s open up!

It's a mellow rumble with the caps on, flowing through the 3" exhaust. We were liberal with the sound deadener in the cab, since back when it was a bracket truck, and gutted inside, the cab acted like a resonating chamber!

From the day Boone decided to re-build the Barnyard into a street/gasser, the goal was 10's, and we worked the math every way we could to show it would get there. Then we started welding stuff in the truck, and bolting stuff in and on the truck, and before we knew it, our 3100lb bracket truck turned into a 3650lb street cruiser...we hadn't exactly added that part up right!

The camshaft swap, 3.91 to 4.30 swap, and Qa-1 front shocks definitely helped last year, but a little more was needed.

My argument was for a tighter converter. Boone bought a 5500 Stall 8 inch TCI in the mid 90's, and it's been his go to converter ever sense. In a roller cam 440 that shifts at 7200...yeah, it worked great. Street driving in a heavy truck with a 508 standard port window head...not so much! Darren had given up Dad's 9 inch billet JW converter when he pulled the engine out of the Dakota, so I convinced Boone to at least give it a try.
"If you like it, buy Dad a replacement, if the stall isn't perfect for your combo, order one just like it, with a slight adjustment", I instructed.
In the Gebhart Family, any parts not being currently used on your ride...are pretty much fair game to be "borrowed", with or without your knowledge!

Boone installed it a couple weeks ago, but he was working when RoadKill came to Tulsa on a Wednesday night, so Dale took it to the track to flog it for him. Dale outweighs Boone by at least a buck-twenty, and apparently had difficulty hitting the shift points(glide car with an electric shifter will ruin your ability to manually shift a 727, apparently)but he managed an 11.23-119 best, so the jury is still out.

The Barnyard viper will be ready, the Gremlin will be ready, the Belvedere will be ready, the Valiant will be ready...
But the pictures of these two short blocks were taken last weekend, and they are supposed to make the trip as well.

Bottom picture is a "Moparts Race Cars/Parts/Trailers" special, purchased from Daytona540, it's a 512 low deck for Darren.

Top one a Koleno 572, for our buddy James to put into my old Challenger. Should be a hell of a racecar, the question of whether it can become a street car is a whole 'nother matter!

New front end is under the Gremlin, how that's going to help it go straight when it's in the air...I have no clue!!

Koleno 572 is complete. Indy EZs, 680 lift solid, 2 stage plate. Recipe for a long lasting, trouble free street engine...maybe. We just know that James has made one pass with a high rpm, roller cam 440, and he trashed the valve springs in the burnout! So maybe this way we can protect him from himself...

Famous last words.........
"Why should I care if Dale has gone faster than you?"

On the koleno short block, what is the coating on the piston?

Great story as always!!
Don

Looks to be a hard anodized coating on those pistons.

Must be tough stuff to hold up to the heat.
Is it to protect the piston or reflect heat into chamber?
Thanks, Don

Don,
As 1967dartgt suggested, it's a hard anodized coating to protect the piston for nitrous use.

I've spent the last two evenings working on the 1 Ton to be ready for the trip, so not much time for this thread.

When M/T started changing their ET Street tires this year, I decided to order a bias ply set for the Valiant ahead of time. I also decided to move up from my 28 X 13.50s to the 31 x 14.50s that both Dale and Boone use.
Finally got around to having them put on the wheels Monday, then tried to mount them on the car...classic case of my eyes being bigger than the wheel well opening!! 30.5 tall, sure! 31, no not even! Back to the drawing board, and if I wanted the 28 X 13.50 that I had previously...they are on back order at Summit until 9/29!

I know my car is not in the same horse power range as yours but I ran M&H's last year and they impressed me.
