anyone use an in-line oil filter between external pickup from the pan to the oil pump? pros and cons of doing so? just a thought.

Has to be a very low restriction type of filter. Probably nothing more than a screen. If your pickup in the pan has a screen on it then that should be all you need. If you're worried about junk in the engine getting into the pan then the best place to put a screen is on the pickup. You can use a really large pickup with a fine screen on it and not have a restriction. There isn't enough room to put a large filter in the extrenal line.

We use them on our dry sumps suction lines... you
can see them under the car(red things)
EDIT
They have them from about 3" long to about 10"...
all thats in it is a screen type filter... we use
them encase you blow up you dont suck trash into
the pump

iagree thumbs A freind of mine lost a hemi motor do to trash seizing the Milidon oil pump from a small piece of debris that was sucked into the Milidon swinging pick and then into the pump puke He ended up buying two short Petersen #10 AN inline filters after that up Andy is correct on using screen around the pickups also, either way will work up

Hemi-itis runs inline oil filters on his hemi. Might want to ask him.

thanks for the input guys. was toying with the idea to keep any possible junk from getting into the oil pump and could monitor better what was going into the pan.

This is what I use. Peterson scavange filter. It has a cleanable screen that I check at most oil changes. A few years ago I had a inner valve spring break that cut the valve guide seal clamp and that small part found its way into the oil pan, stood up to go into the Milodon swinging pick up (through the pick up screen) and into the oil pump, locking up the pump and twisting off the end of the oil pump/distributor shaft. The scavange filter did NOT stop the small pieces of aluminum from going into the pump this year when I broke the crankshaft, ruining the oil pump again.

After In had a piece of debris jam the oil pump rotor and snap the oil pump drive,Jimi Vignogna told me to use these in each line.
