Some guys are telling me to run a 'glide in my car instead of a 727. It's a radial tire, stock suspension, procharged smallblock, 1100 horse at the flywheel, and 3500 lbs. Will I lose any performance going to a glide? Is there another set-up I should consider? I'm open to suggestions from you guys that have ran something similar.

Clint, you must have something more than stock springs and shocks, I assume? What all do you have? The glide would definitely help you get the car down the track, and you might be approaching the limits of the stock internals of a 727.

I've recently asked this same question about my 1000hp ladder bar, big tire car after breaking a slightly built-up 727 for the 2nd time... Pretty much the consensus was a Pro-flight (built 727) will handle the torque of the motor, but will require frequent maintenance... The PG trans will hold the power better and longer with less maintenance..

If you currently have a TF trans, the cost of swapping out a Pro-Flight is real close to the cost to convert over to a PG.. The PF runs $5500-ish.. which is about the same cost to buy a built PG with the adapter kit, crossmember, shifter and driveshaft..

I've heard the PF will be a little faster in the 1/4 mile, but the PG weighs less and replacement parts are cheaper and easier to find..

Good luck with your trans and be sure to post on here your progress

A ProFlite WONT handle a ton of TQ without at the very least FREQUENT maintenance and occasional failures. I am not speculating I have seen and experienced it. In cars with a LOT of torque something like a Rossler TH210 or similar is the way to go. Wander around Top Sportsman and Pro Mod pits and see what they use for a true automatic. You will not find a Proflite among them. Proflites are great pieces SS and Comp cars that make good power with smaller cubes and not tons of torque. If you have a high winding 400ish" sb making 1100hp and not much torque then they are the quick way down the track. But they do not live long happy lives even there. I know I know the Hemi guys run them, Well let me tell ya they aint making killer TQ but make good power at high RPM's.

A glide can be built to handle whatever power you are making. The old wives tale about they don't work in heavy cars is just that, bunk! Just build it for it's intended purpose. Something like a Rossler XHD will live a long happy life behind a powerplant like yours as well. I just sold mine for a sons(actually traded it off)but don't be shy. Transmissions like that do not come cheap for sure.

In your case a true all the bells and whistle Proflite MAY work. I don't know what kind of torque you are making with that set up. Being a SB it may be ok. FWIW an all the bells and whistles ProFlite is NOT $5500 either..Both the Proflite and Rossler offer a variety of first gear ratios as well. So does a glide. But for a blown combo I cannot imagine you want a ton of first gear..

IMO if you are like most of us and have plans of some day going to more power just go right to the best piece available. Money wise a Rossler is on par with a Proflite and if it were my money would be the direction I would go.

As you know Al, I've been shopping for trans these last couple of days and came across these ads which I used to base my $5500-ish comment..

It's funny no one asked what is his application. Is the car a bracket car? If so, the glide will be more consistent. At that weight, you may give up some et to the glide. Converter selection is important here.
If you are running a class where et is important, the ProFlite will be faster. I know my car and a SS/AM car both picked up a tenth and a half over the glide. These are both low 8 second rides. As far as maintenance goes, I am not seeing what some are seeing but I do not have massive torque like a pro mod and I do know Lonnie Johnson who runs a Pro Stock Hemi with a ProFlite in Comp and has over 150 passes last I spoke with him last year.

I'll go out on a limb and say a procharged drag radial equipped small block with the listed HP definitely IS NOT a bracket car.

I'd also believe that this combo set on kill will run quicker with the 3spd.

99 Hemis do not make killer torque. I ran one for a few here years, in a much heavier car than a comp car. Watched a buddy in TS wrestle the PF issue and it never stayed together and they worked directly with Dave. I have a buddy I am helping as well with a PF behind a 99, also in a 2200lb ex pro stock car, similar to what a B/AA car would be. I agree in a heads up deal the three speed should be the faster way down the track. But SS/AM and a B/AA car are a different animal than SB procharged heads up type car.

Don Call Adam tell him I told you to call and inquire about a ProFlite. I think you will find by the time you are done you will be well north of that number. I have his cell if you like smile Just sayin

Don't get me wrong a PF is a very good piece and in most of the fastest comp and SS cars in the country. Most of which are high winding relatively low torque high RPM deals. We use one in the heads up car. A smallish motor that is shifted north of 9500rpm. Works well in this environment for sure. If that was what I was running believe me I would have one..I will also admit that since we switched from a Th400 based tranny we have not picked up much of anything. But we just made the switch 9 passes ago.

interesting that a lot of the top diesel drag trucks sport torqueflights. Wonder why they are the weapon of choice in those circles. Heavy vehicles, tons of torque... and of course, no aluminum carries in those builds.

Dave Hall... Last years Div 7 S/ST champ converted from a PF to a PG and won the championship with the PG.. In a conversation with him, he said his car picked up .10 with the PG over the PF and the total cost to convert was over $6500... So if Al is correct and a PF costs north of $5500, then it seems to be the logical choice to go with a PG..

one shift, more consistent, oodles of parts available in the pits if/when you break something. For your super class aspirations I have no doubt it's the correct choice for the arena in which you choose to play. Of course.... If you break it at MaTS, you're on your own! smile

well I'm in question as much as you Al.... Perhaps they are tearing them down after each event, who knows. It was just the "torque" comments that made me go "hmmmmm".

the 4L80E (decendant of the TH400) has overshadowed the torqueflight based race trans over the years, but still had players running over in the 1000ft lb torque range.

I also feel that the "quicker" powerglide in Dave Halls application probably came down to a more "correct" torque converter for the package.

well that was about the shortest post I've ever seen from you Monte.... What thou say?

fwiw I have no dog in this fight, but it's a very interesting subject. I'll be sticking with my torqueflight. I'm not making oodles of power, it's bought and paid for along with the converters, and it's also very easy for me to pull the W8 mill and simply install the iron head piece in it's place..... at least that's my story for now.

Don't worry Don.... I hear the PG is even easier to work on. We'll tear right in to it if need be. I got help just a phone call away! smile

If you notice, I said PRO-FLITE, which some were suggesting he run. I don't care who runs them in what, it won't last til the water gets hot on a 1100hp car with drag radials.........Now as far as a 727, could he make it live behind his combo, probably. But gear ratio selection will be a problem. You could make it a second gear leaver.....but for the money invested, just do the glide and be done with it

If you wanna ET go 3spd Brkt race 2spd, look at all fast drag radial and outlaw 10.5 cars majority will have a 3spd of some make,
If I win the lottery I will have a Rossler 400.
