I have a 2004 Grand Cherokee 4.0L 6 cyl. It has only 33,600 original miles and it is in great condition. I've owned it since new. When re-starting from a hot start, especially in hot weather, it runs rough, almost sounding like a couple of cylinders aren't firing until I give it some gas bringing up the RPM's. Then, it smooths out and runs fine from then on. No codes are set and it runs great otherwise. Any ideas what could be causing this? Anyone have similar issues with their Jeep?

i have a old Dakota with the same problem,in my case its the "new fuel",as it was fine several years ago and nothing i can do will make it go away, you might try premium no ethanol fuel if its available near you,it cant hurt it!

That's interesting. I also have an '87 Dakota with the original carburetor and it runs great even with 10% ethanol. No hot start issues whatsoever.

my 05 jeep grand Cherokee limited with 4.7 v-8 did the same thing and it was the egr valve needed replaced.

took a while but then it one day popped the code for it.

ran like crap till it popped code then it has ran perfect since it was replaced.

Just wanted to report back that after a 1000 mile trip, that included a variety of temperatures, mix of highway and backroads, lots of hilly terrain and a fully loaded vehicle, that this issue did not reoccur even once. I'll keep the suggestion of the egr valve in mind if it starts happening again. Thanks for the replies.

A guy at work has a Dakota that was experiencing the hot start/rough idle condition. Ended up being the crank sensor. Seemed odd but it took care of the issue. Evidently the sensor was acting up when hot.
