My Cousin has a 71 Demon. He installed that plate (gate) in his automatic floor shifter but it doesn't work like a real slapstick and is hard to use.
Is there a conversion that works or can a slapstick be installed in his console?
Thanks,

What plate did he swap in ?

I've seen E body console swapped into an A body MANY moons ago , should be able to swap one in, might take a little creative blending to make it look factory .

running up my post count some more .

I'm not sure but it shift terrible. He would be better off with the factory shifter gate and just be careful not to miss a gear.

If he's got the Shift R Gate thing, I have one and it works good once you fiddle with it a bit. They are just touchy about the install and adjustment. Once you get it right, they work good IMHO.

With his it keeps sticking. Plus you have to push the button once your in 2nd to shift to Drive.
A real slap stick only requires pushing the button to shift down a gear. Up shifts are one at a time without the button being depressed and you can't hit Neutral. They stop at D . Then to shift to Neutral you must depress the button.

Yep, that's how they work and how they are different, not exactly like a slapstick but a lot better than stock if you want to race it and shift manually and not worry about throwing it into neutral or reverse.

The sticking part can be helped with adjustments like adjusting how many turns in the shift button/knob is and I think there is some adjustment with how the gate is mounted. Like I said you have to fiddle around a bit. A lot people don't like these because they haven't done the fiddle around part yet to get it just so.

The Slapstick requires a straight shaft (or somebody much more creative than I am). You can bolt a Slapstick shifter into an A-body, but the upper arm on the vertical rod needs to be shortened from 2.5" to 2.25" (hole center to hole center). I have a 1970 E-body shifter and a later long handle Slapstick. One of them will go into my Barracuda ('67 convertible).
