Is the engine to transmission brace that goes from the bellhousing to the drivers side of the engine different for 340 engines and 360 engines? I have a 78 360 block I am putting in my Cuda that originally had a 340 and now this brace seems to short.

Personally wouldn't worry about it. Seen many put together with out and no evil effects. I personally have left them off many times on engines that have no way to put them on past headers etc and not had any problems. IMO they are overkill

In the late model trucks, magnum V8s have a brace on each side from the motor mount boss to the bell, but only on automatics. Manuals did not have them.

Must not be THAT critical?

I think they are all the same size and length for small blocks? If they fit why not use them? Look closer, I bet it fit's.

For some reason I thought I read where the 360 has one mounting boss in a slightly different location then the 318/340.

Evidently they were put there for a reason, doubt they (Chrysler) would have went to the expense otherwise .

The unsupported portion of the SB bellhousing extends further below the block than the BB does, that's why the braces are there...to support the lower part of the bellhousing.

they moved the bolt hole sometime in the mid 70s and I think they did it again with the magnums.

Thanks, it is a 1978 block. That must be my problem. Anybody got one?

No, OP is correct. From my experiences, 318 and 340 are the same. But when I swapped my 318 out of the Barracuda for a 360, only one brace would fit the other was about an inch short IIRC. Can't remember off hand which side is short. The 360 block had the machined boss at the same location as the 318, but the boss was not drilled for a bolt at the 318/340 location. Don't know if this is true with all 360's or not (Mine is a '74 casting).

Still looking for a pic, wondering if I should add these.
Not clear on where they attach.

If it's just barely too short what about using some grade 8 washers as spacers? I have headers on mine so it came off. Never had any issues without it

They are put there to raise the natural frequency of the powertrain bending mode. On modern engines (take a look at a 5.7l hemi) the structure is incorporated into the dust cover.

If you have two short ones just slice the two together, trim till they fit tight, tack then tig it, grind till smooth. Nobody will notice when painted. I would use them.
The new 5.7s trans are bolted to the oil pan which will be a pita with an aftermarket pan.

It's got a cop motor, a 440 cubic inch plant, it's got cop tires, cop suspensions, cop shocks. It's a model made before catalytic converters so it'll run good on regular gas.
