Is there a way to adjust the axle end play by feel? I have a dial indicator but It doesn't have a clamp on it to put on the brake backing plate. I know it says to tighten the adjuster all the way and then back off 4 notches, what is 4 notches? I figure I wouldn't want much end play, I read online and some guys say they adjust it untill the axles barely have some play, to where they can hear the end play but not see it.

Four notches in the adjuster in what they are probably referring to. I have done it by feel before but if you never done it before it may be hard for you to tell what is the right amount. Too tight is as bad as not tight enough. Someone here with more experience should be able to lead you thru the process.

So literally enough end play to where I can hear it moving but can't really see it moving, because if I can see it moving its prob too much right? Or if I do it see moving make sure it's not more then a C hair 😉

You want to feel it not hear it IMO.

iagree Barely feel it, .002 to no more than .010. These are the same type, tapered Timken roller bearings with inner and outer races) and brand as is in all the third members, those have a lot of preload put on them stock so make sure you do NOT have to MUCH end play up

Factory Service Manual will help too. You do have one right? If not then you can get that info from here:

Clean it, if it's Dirty. Oil it, if it Squeaks. But: Don't fix it, if it Works!

Well I adjusted it untill I could barely move the axle shafts in and out, I would go and check the drivers side axle shaft as well, and I would spin the axles a few revolutions and push and pull on them. I have it set to where they are barely moving in and out. You can feel the axles moving in and out and you can hear it a little of you listen really close.
I think it will be ok. Once I have thA axle installed on the truck I will take it for a drive and listen close for any noises. I think it should be good.
