A dana 70 is probably not something you'd want to use in a car. After the 60, they get much heavier. A 70 is closer to a dana 80 in weight and probably strength if I remember right. I have a dana 80 lying around in my shop, and believe me, that's a big heavy sonofabitch!

Exactly 610 posts on old board, first whacked post in the history of this one! Funny moparts quote from Waginator: "*If you want your package lost, like bermuda triangle lost, use DHL (formerly airborne) *if you want it to get there but destroyed, use UPS."

DirectSubjection have you seen the Warriors video game?

Yeah - I just bought it but haven't tried it yet. I picked up a new 34" TV and moved the PS onto it but haven't turned the game box on yet to see if I screwed up the install.

Working on the PC version of Call Of Duty II right now.

And I agree - 70s, 80's, GM 14-bolts etc are not suited for car use.

They can be machined easy for one though.

Scored one over the weekend from a 1976 Dodge 1 ton motor home chassis. Has 60HD cast on the center section.

I have heard of guys mounting the pinion snubber upside down on the body of the car.

You weld on 8-3/4 ends, after cutting off the truck "full floating ends", with the width you need for your car presumably?

Custom axles then?

Can't get the brake drum loose on one end, the guy I bought it from wants to keep them. Thought about torching the studs holding the backing plate on, and then accessing the brake assembly through the 3"-4" hole the axle tube goes through. The guy beat the adjuster to death with a chisel, and took the brake cylinder loose and pushed it down into the drum.

Any ideas (pic)?

(Don't mean to hijack thread, hopefully others will learn something to doing this conversion).

IIRC, 60HDs have 3 1/2" axle tubes? (Standard 60s have 3" like 8 3/4s? )
Where's DrDiff when you need him?

What's the difference in bolt patterns? I saw a Dana in an old dart in a yard here and it had a HUGE bolt pattern. Are the axles interchangable? After hearing $650 for a A-body 8 3/4 in the same yard, I didn't even bother asking about the Dana.

Most standard 60s are in 3/4 and 1T trucks and vans and are 8 lugs w/ full floating axles. There are some 60s in late 70s (?) Ford trucks that are 5 lug and semi-floating axles. I'm almost positive the 60 HDs have bigger axle tubes than a standard 60. Maybe DrDiff or someone with a little more knowledge will chime in.

Great pic Smokey. Makes you wonder if it came from the same molds some of the last car rears were made from.

Just eyeballing the Dana 60HD compared to the 69 and 71 car Dana 60s, the 60HD tubes appear to be thicker, but maybe by a 1/4" or so. Also, the tubes taper down a fraction in thickness a few inches before the backing plates on the 60HD, whereas the car Danas taper up in thickness???

The numbers on the 60HD are 6 7 5, meaning June 7, 1975.

The B.O.M. # is 603514 - 2, (5 is pitted, my best guess). Haven't been able to find this number on the internet, but did find a 603516 for a Dana B.O.M. The 60HD was cast in on the front side of the center housing.

The rear had dual wheels on it, but it is not a sure-grip unit.

The ratio tag has 11 on top, and 4? something on the bottom of it. I could only find one ratio with 11 for the pinion gear, so I presume the ratio is 3.73.

I bought a 91 ram van for the 360...the guy who sold it to me, told that it didn't have an od tranny......well it does and being a 3/4 ton it had a dana 60.

I took a quick look for the equipment sticker and couldn't find it. I figure pull the cover off the dana and I'll be able to see the ratio.

I pay for the van a whopping $300 and the guy gives me the title....then he hands me the sticker...BONUS 4:10 sure grip!

if you cut the tube and install 8.75 housing ends, can you use the 8.75 axels in the D60?

Dakota Don, that was my question on page one, custom axles??

Here is a link to a chart with some of the various dimensions and spline counts:

http://www.autohobbydigest.com/dana.html

Good quote from the article:

"When installing truck differentials in cars, it is usually necessary to replace the differential gears which the axle shaft splines engage (part 55 in Figure 1). These are readily available for 1-1/2"x35 spline axle shafts as are the pinion gears and shafts (parts 53 and 54 in Figure 1)."

It can be done but from what I understand its a waste of time. They old ends are usually damaged or way oversize and new ones are around $70

I just had a dana 60 truck housing cut to size for my road runner. The mopar ends were welded on. You can use the ford ends if you with to use the svo rear disk kit (Like available from Dr Diff)

The Red circle is where the "60" is marked to ensure you get the correct housing
The Green Circle shows the new Mopar ends welded on.
