I'm looking for opinions on running a Comp Cams XE268 in a mild 440 with 9.0 compression ratio, 915 stock heads, & 6 pack in 71 Charger. I'm interested in idle quality, streetability, and vacuum as I have power brakes. I do want to maintain the muscle car sound and have no plans on racing. Just want a nice ride and sound. I am currently running a 280 purple shaft which is low on vacuum. Thanks in advance for advice and opinions.

I would rather have the 270 magnum for the "muscle car" sound.

The 268 will be a smooth torque motor with a hint of idle.Headers will help it sound a little healthier.

I agree and better yet call Tim @ Bullet cams for a great grind for your combo.

as far as idle quality, streetability, good with power brakes, it's hard to beat the summit 6401 cam. this is what i use.

I installed a XE268 in a customer's 68 runner that had 9.5 to 1, DP4B with the AVS, 906 heads with standard size valves, factory exhaust manifolds. Took out a 284 Purple Shaft that gave less than 10" of vacuum. The car sounds like a new street hemi used to, has 16" of vacuum and fries the tires with a 3.23 in low gear when you mat the throttle. I installed it straight up, no cam advance.

I have ran the 268xe in my 440 for 2 years. Love it. Great driveability, slightly lopey idle and like Transman said, nail the throttle, and it cooks the tires.
I am installing the freshly built 440 I have been working on for my swb D150 and it also has a 268xe. Stock converter works well, as do power brakes.
I've had other cams in 440s in a truck, but hands down I like the 268 best.
I too installed it straight up.

Is the low vacuum your only dislike of your current cam? I ask because for about $260 you could install an electric pump to produce all the brake vacuum you need and its always there.

Low vacuum is one dislike but I don't believe the motor has the power it should.

For the price of an off the shelf cam you cna get a custom grind from Comp.
Call them and have them spec a cam for your exact build.

XE268 sounds mean in my 451 ,worked good in a 383 too, hits the rev limiter very quickly , set at 6200 ,pulls overdrive like a super star .
Would like to try a Mopar 528 solid tho.
