I'm going through the original AVS for my Sport Fury's 440 (4429S), and it appears that I'm missing the plugs the cover the air bleed passages:

I rebuilt this carb right after getting the car (back in 2005), and frankly I don't remember if the plugs were in place or not. I can't imagine it would run right if they weren't in place, and I only pulled the original carb because the choke wasn't working right. The new rebuild kit doesn't have them in it, and I don't have another AVS sitting around. I'd like to know if there are replacements out there, or if I have to cook some up on the lathe. Shouldn't be too tough, but will take some time I could put elsewhere.

Thanks!

Clair

Should have a lead plug on both sides. I though they had adjustments inside. I cannot tell if there are threads inside.

Look at this one:

if the adjustment screws are still in there you don't need the plugs. they'd be easy to make from fishing weights. they weren't anything fancy, just lead stuffed in the hole.

Correct, any type of lead can be used to punch into those holes, slightly oversized hunk of lead, a small punch, and tap it in.

Carter once sold kits with various plugs but they are LONG since obsolete, I paid a ton for a couple of them just to have a few parts handy, sure would be nice if these were still available!

doing some thinking and i need to make a "correction". those are not mixture screw plugs. somebody corrected me on this, their reply is missing, and they were right. those plugs cover the transfer slot machining. i took a pic of plugs i pulled out of a junk carb. they'er alum, but a piece of lead will work.

sorry, with the new stuff i can't get a picture to load.

Strange - some posts are missing.

Unfortunately, I found a photo I took a couple weeks after I bought the car and it clearly shows the plugs in place:

Sooooo... it's my bad that they're missing. Oops. Got most of one finished on the lathe last night, but if that doesn't work I'll look in to some other options.

Rats...

Clair

Wow, all the pics are tiny now. This new front end is funky...

https://buy.walkerproducts.com/carbureto...components.html

They have two size lead balls, 1/4" and 19/64" I believe.

83-4 LEAD BALL ( 1/4” )
83-6 LEAD BALL ( 19/64” )

If either will work you can get it from them.

They say there are no such thing as a stupid question.
They say there is always the exception that proves the rule.
Don't be the exception.

Thanks, guys!
Since I'm almost done with one of the plugs, I'm going to try to finish up tonight. If I nuke something, I'll take one of you fine gents up on your generous offer for OEM parts.

And that link to the Walker carb parts is great! Definitely going to bookmark that one.

One way or the other, I should be able to get this little detail sorted out soon. Plugs don't HAVE to go in until she's ready to run, so I think I'm in good shape.

Thanks again!

Clair
