My Neighbor is having an Issue with an Ignition system he built on an old Jeep, He replaced the points with a hall effect sensor. It has worked great for him, today he pulled in and we were talking for a few minutes. The jeep was idling, and it just shut off, it was pretty easy to tell it was ignition related, it just shut right down,I thought he turned the key off.. Well long story short, we found it wasn't getting spark, we tested the coil with an Ohm meter it was good. Tested the distributor has 12V but cant get a ground signal out of it. I took the hall effect sensor and trigger out,ran 12V to the hot side ran a test light on the ground side and no matter how close I held or moved the trigger, I couldn't get a ground signal out of it. Im guessing the Sensor is bad, what do you guys think? BTW it is opposite of the OEM Mopar Hall Effect style..The magnets are on a collar on the shaft, and the pickup is on the side of the distributor. Thanks!

I've heard of lots of failures of those units.

Maybe my thinking is incorrect on it. The wiring is very simple, it has a hot from the ignition switch to the pos.on the coil then down to the "Hot" wire on the hall effect/ignition unit inside the distributor. The ground wire from the unit goes back up to the Neg side of the coil. That's why I figured that the unit completed the ground in order to fire the coil.
The unit you have is also a processor of some type. The sensor is part of it. You most likely are on the right track. Pertronixs should have a way to diagnose the problem. Some coils don't work correctly with the Pertronixs ignitions.

Hmm maybe he burnt the Pertronix unit up by Using an MSD Coil.. He is going to call them in the morning. Thanks for the advice guys!

AFAIK, the pertonix has brains inside to change the dwell angle based on rpm. So just tapping it to a magnet will probably not make it send the signal to the coil. But yes, if it was just a 'dumb' hall effect sensor, then you should be able to tap it, assuming you have an external pullup on the signal ![](/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/wink.gif)
If you ever find yourself in a fair fight, your tactics suck.
