"am I expecting too much?"
Not to me, but would be curious how the pros respond, not sure if doing it is that burdensome, or they figure the customer should just trust them, or the customer wouldn't know the difference no matter what paperwork/documentation was supplied anyway, or?

I really have wondered why builders provide sheets.
I have sold several engines, short blocks, heads and provided spec. sheets. Few weeks later the buyers call wanting specs. Well guess what no longer have them. I gave them to the buyer. Don't know if they had a roadside emergency and the sheets were used for wiping or needed to start a fire.
A lot of work to get the details for them to lose them.

I wouldn't think that providing basic specs should not be a problem. Any part that was purchased and installed in the engine would be good info to have in case a replacement was needed down the road. I want to say that a good engine builder would give this info to the customer and keep a record for himself as well.

Do you provide documentation with a new engine build? I expected some form of build sheet. Have had the motor a over month now and no info after several requests. Expected spec sheets with final measured data like compression ratio, and clearances, cam card etc...am I expecting too much????? Finally ordered a torque converter cause I figure the info isn't coming and had to tell them the CR is somewhere around 10.5 cause that's what I asked for. Still hoping to get the info..so I am not posting names for now...
this is why i'd never let someone build my engines. even if you had a spec sheet how can you verify it after everything is buttoned up?

I always give an itemized invoice with part numbers etc. I tell and explain all the other vitals to the owner...valve lash, CR, cam specs, etc. As I said, I 'tell' them this, they could write it down or just plain remember it,,,but they don't. That's why I always keep notes during the entire build and keep the notes in their file in my filing cabinets. I KNOW they are going to be calling in a few days/weeks asking questions that have already been answered. These notes also include any conversations we might have had about a certain situation and the mutually agreed upon decision. Most of my customers just want to pay and go racing.

I don't do formal spec sheets. But I give all my notes on the assembly which tells the tale. Plus, I like to take some photos. Which often mean more to the buyer than the specs. Did you ask the builder about this BEFORE the build began?

was it dyno tested?you still need to know whats in it,especially if you ever decide to part ways with it.not to mention maintenance, valve lash, cam settings,etc...
SFI 25.5 depends,no leak,even at 213 mph....

I've provided them(blueprint build sheets with all the measurements and specs. on them) for years, I have not kept copies until recently due to the owners losing them or misplacing them and then asking me what was in thier motors several months to years later I do give them the cam cards, dyno sheets and balance sheets from the machine shops also I am making copies of all of them now also to file in my records I know racers and engine builders that hope everything they ask for from the machine shop is dead on, some check and have errors they find corrected and some don't have the tools needed to check all that I think they should check like bearing clearances, V tp P clearances, piston to wall clearances, deck hieghts, cam timimg , cylinder head CC and valve spring pressures and a bunch of others things I won't take up space on this post identifying

I have only had one complete motor built for me, but have had plenty of machine work done over the years. I don't ever remember getting any paperwork other than a paid receipt that I paid the shop.
Sonny's in Virgina built me a 632 out of a Donovan block that I provided. I did not get any paper work with it that I remember. I sure didn't have any trouble selling it after I was done with it. I guess those 7 second time slips told the story?
It's always up to the customer to verify that the clearances are proper when I put it together.
I think if you want details on your build other than cam cards etc, then you should pay extra because I know notes takes extra time when building a motor. I used to do it(rebuild a race engine, blown hemi) almost every week for like ten years during every summer.

And how are they supposed to do that....take it apart and check everything?

I have been a technician for over 20 years, and almost all of my personal builds were assembled by me after machine work. I have had a few instances where the machine shop insisted to assemble to insure their confidence. However with my recent 472 endeavor I allowed Gary Stanton of Stanton Racing build it. I too, was very adamant about wanting specs along with part numbers in case I have any issues down the road... And still, it was like pulling teeth to get him to give me any info! Don't get me wrong Gary is a hell of a guy, but it seems their ego's don't like to deal with someone asking questions. Maybe some people just pay and go, then never worry about the stuff til it comes to the fore front. I'm not one of those people, so I see where you're coming from. I did manage to get some info from him, but not to my liking....

No not if you pay for a assembled engine, I didn't take that sonny's engine apart before racing it.
I was talking about if I have machine work done to individual components.
