My neighbor has a 07 SRT-8 Jeep with a blown Motor. Young guy in his mid 20's. Went to a local lube joint and had the oil changed. Within that week the motor started knocking. Local dealer told him the lower end is shot. He's gotten prices from $5k-$8K to put in a used motor. Jeep has 77k on it. I've seen this guy every weekend wash this jeep. Till the motor went. Now it sits in his garage. Been sitting for a year now. What would this Jeep be worth? Thinking of making him an offer on the Jeep. Interior is flawless along with the exterior. Never wrecked. Just looking for some input. Thanks

Well, it's 8 years old with a dead motor.....is it paid off or is he still making payments..??? If he is what does he owe...???

Personally I wouldn't offer more than $2K and I'd try to get it for less than that.

Are you able to put the motor together yourself following machine work...???

2 grand or less? Get real. Do you have any idea what an SRT8 Jeep is?

Kelly Blue Book is around $20k in good conditon. Deduct what it would take to repair the engine well (ie new engine at dealer or good shop). More than 7k for repairs I think. The 6.1 is a high po engine... used examples may be beat if you can find one.

Otherwise, do you know the history of the vehicle? How was it run and cared for? If it was run hard, other parts of the powertrain may be iffy... transmission, T case, axles ect.

It could be a screaming great deal or a money pit.

I know the truck pretty well. Truck is paid off he owns it free and clear. It's his second one. First one got wrecked right in front of our houses. Someone ran a stop sign and T-boned it. Truck was very well taken care of up until the motor started knocking. He has all paper work and receipts for all the work done to it. Never known him to beat on the truck. Pulling the motor and breaking it down is not an issue for me. Been 20 years since I put a motor together. Speed shop In Danbury CT called "Danbury Competition" would be tapped for the machine work. I've used them in the past. I would do the assembly. I was thinking no more then $5k for the truck. Considering I know the history. I have been looking at used engines. Still an unknown till I fire it up. Would rather rebuild the original motor. Then I know what I have.

Certainly sounds like your friend took great care of his Jeep.....I don't rely on Kelly Blue Book.....an 8 year old vehicle is worth what it's worth to you. If it's your dream machine the 5k is probably a great price.

Appreciate all the input. Not my Dream vehicle. But, who wouldn't want a Hemi, even though it is modern. Rebuild cost on the motor I'd be looking at $3k-$4. So if I'm all in at just under 10K I'd be happy with that. Truck would sell up here in the Northeast for $18k. Just hate seeing the Truck sit. Then move on to the next one.

Depends what you want it for. If it was a dream vehicle then id drop 10K on it no sweat, even higher. You could get a good short block off LXForums for probably 3K ish, put all the accessories off the blown motor on it and be laughing. Or even send the short block out for a rebuild, perfect time to add forged Pistons and a cam.
SRT Jeeps keep their value. Heck even if it's not a dream vehicle and it's just something to have abit of fun and then flip, 10K is still a good deal, . If it's as nice as you say then it's worth well over 20K once it's back up and running. Good for you if u can get it for 2K but be prepared to get laughed at or have the guy be insulted, that price is a dream

A member here (70B5Cuda) parts out SRT8 stuff and always has complete 6.1's sitting around stacked like cordwood.

He advertises them on the Wichita, KS craigslist.

PM me if you would like a phone number.

No doubt. Had that typed out yesterday too, and then just figured, nah, no sense in arguing.

Can't even buy the wheels for one of these Rockets for 2 grand.

Anything less than $10,000.00 will be an insult to the Owner.

My opinion....the OP stated 4-5K that's his opinion...not that far off...

How many vehicles have you sold with blown engines....my guess is zero....go to an auction and see what they bring at 8 years old.

If you don't like what I posted then read someone else's.

$5k is what I would feel comfortable with buying the Jeep. I've known this family for 25 years. It will be sitting a year in June. If I don't see it move by May. I'll make him an offer and see where it goes. He's not a Mopar car. Guy grew up seeing Myself and my father with Muscle cars his whole life. I know the Jeep is worth an average of $20k all day long. I'm not looking to make a killing. Just hate seeing that jeep just sit.

The key to this is knowing the vehicle and it's history. As Rickster mentioned, going across the auction block and a buyer has no clue what else is screwed up with it would probably go for 2k.
You could offer more and be comfortable then hope he takes it.
If you were planning to turn up the wick on performance like with a supercharger, you would have to rebuild the engine anyway.

I'd say 8 grand would be fair. And if you did buy it why not just order up a nice Arrington 426 Stroker motor for it. Heck I bet they could walk you through the process of replacing it. If not could recommend someone to do it for you. Bet for 15 grand you could have a bad fast ride. For 5 grand I would definitely buy it as that would be a steal of a price.
