Wipers come up a lot. Wouldn't a healthy maintanence routine with Rain-X be sufficient? I think that stuff actually works better than a lot of 45 year old wiper systems.

Has factory equipment (wipers, horn, heater), ability to drive distances and idle for extended period of times and has plates.

With the distance provision I'd imagine pump gas would be a requirement. Chute and wheelie bars? Why not as long as they don't interfere with operation.

I drove my GTX and Dart without heater trying to get the last bits of weight out that I could, not fun at all on the street when living in New England and I'm sure the DMV has a regulation stating a vehicle must have working defroster.

I also drove with fiberglass bumpers which was nerve wracking. These were not weekend toys but daily drivers back in the day.

Being from the northeast, I do like a heater and defrosters. Plenty of colder nights having the car out, and the windows get foggy.
But if I lived in Arizona, I see no real need for it. What about cars that didn't have heat from the factory?

I say as long as you can register and insure it, and put up with driving it for an extended period, anything goes. The drag week guys prove this. How many years did Larson run with no trailer? On the same tires the whole time.
It's up to the driver. If you can put up with a 1,500 rpm idle, 5,500 stall, and your eyes watering every time you stop, who am I to say you don't have a street car?

I consider my car a street car and I don't have DOT tires on the back.

I did, but to be honest I didn't think that the tires I had were going to be safe in the rain anyway, so I was avoiding it anyway. When I changed them I just went to a set of real slicks.

I have...
A small hydraulic roller cam
3.55 gear
2500 stall converter
DOT Street tires
Full Exhaust
Seat Belts
Registration/Insurance/Plates

But your saying because NHRA says my 9.80 car needs a roll bar (which I've safely installed with seat belts in all 4 corners in the car, and I run it on E85 which is available everywhere around here... I'm not a street car?

In the mid-west E-85 is everywhere... I can drive in any direction 200 miles and feel confident that I'll be able to find a station. You'd be a fool not to take advantage of the E85 out here for boosted/high compression cars. Certainly no one around here talks like that about E85.

Hmmm... these "rules" and comments sure sound like they were made up buy a bunch of west coast 11.50 guys trying to justify why their cars are the fastest "street" cars around.

I have no problem piling my whole family in my car, and going wherever we need to. My 5 year olds don't complain about my roll bar... not sure why you guys would.

A street car is anything you can drive on the street.
It's up to the owner/driver to decide what level of pain and suffering is tolerable for the occupants of the vehicle. Some people can put up with a whole bunch to "make a statement" or just have fun with it.

I personally have gone soft in my old age. I require power steering and air conditioning in my rides. I'll never again have a "race only" vehicle, because I enjoy simply driving my stuff too much to only trailer it around and pay somebody else to provide me with a place to play with it. That, and I hate waiting in lines.... LOL

your kids heads are awful close to those roll bars, have you ever checked to see how much the restraints will move in case of a roll? im with you on the rules but I would never strap my kids back there. a 5 year old has no fear it's up to you to make sure they are safe

Thanks for the comment/concern . I was a seat/seat belt engineer for 15 years, so I have a pretty good handle on what belts can/can't do. They are cranked in there pretty good by the lap belts at the proper cushion belt angle. I wouldn't put them back there either if I hadn't spent a lot of time making sure it was safe before doing so.

According to some of you guys........a factory original 63 Max Wedge car, with the 13.1 motor, solid lifter, heater delete, wiper delete, manual steering, drum brake car, that you could buy off the dealer lot and drive home, is NOT a street car.........Sounds like some guys need to "sack up".........LOL!!!

I guess the '68 Hemi Darts and Barracudas were street cars as well?

Some of the factory offerings were race cars offered to the public for racing purposes as well you know Monte!

Here is quick "Rule of thumb" that I have employed for thirty years:

#1 "I Have the Quickest, Fastest, Street Car in the World!"
#2 Therefore any car slower than me may be deemed a street car.
#3 All cars faster than mine are very obviously race cars! If you don't agree, refer to #1!!!

Best definition yet !!

Naw... just because it has a license plate, does not make it a "street car" more like a race car that is driven on the streets..

I will say all the Max Wedge cars were street legal and could be tagged and driven off the dealer lot. The 68 Hemi A-bodies could not. Ron

Not in CT brother, mandatory defrost/heat as long as I have been alive.

Isn't the first time Chrysler has run afoul of states laws. I think the Daytona's and Bird's had some issue in Maryland regarding bumpers and in CT they had to change the law so Vipers could be sold here.

Side exiting exhaust had been banned at some point.

I would generally agree though that the Max Wedge cars would generally be closer to a street car than a full race vehicle as most of the street characteristics are there. When you buy such a car you know what you are getting into though.
