Have a 340, 750 Holley DP carb, performer manifold. 1 5/8 headers, unknown compression and I believe a stock bottom end, has a hyd cam in it but unknown
So I am going to take it to the track and see what it has. I have had it up to 5500 at shifting.
What would be a safe RPM not to exceed?

Thats a unknown.. but I would think 6000 is easy IF
you have any kind of decent valve springs... I use to
go higher than 6000 on a stock engine... valve springs
were the weak point

Valve springs look new but they are unknown also

if the springs are single with damper i would say 5,500 to 6. if its a true double than it probably has a stout cam try 6 to 6,500

I used to twist my 340 to 8500 but it was far from stock.

I had roughly the same motor in my Dart when I got it.....I measured cam lift and got .460 at the retainer.
That motor was just making more noise after 5500 according to the tail bone dyno.
There was a full exhaust system that was somewhat restrictive too.
Still , I don't think there was much to be gained leaning on it any harder

I've always thought the pushrod angle is the limiting factor in the LA engine rev limit.

Mike my old 340 was stock bottom end, Eddy heads, 230/230 480/480 hyd cam, air gap, 750.

5600 was the sweet spot, it didn't go any faster spinning it higher.

Back in the old days of Stock Elim when you had to run stock springs and stamped rockers and real factory cam. I shifted at 6800 in both hc and lc 340's at 7200 it would punch rockers. I had first hc and lc 340's to hold NHRA national records in the 11's. Many years later had 1st lc 340 record holder in the 10's shifted that at 7800. 340's like rpm. Modern cams should work a lot better than the old stock cam. I would start at 6500 and go up from there. Let your ET slip be your guide.

Every part of the drivetrain is involved in where to shift the motor. I encurage my customers with new motors to go make some runs, 2 or 3, shifting at 5000 rpm and then again at 5500 RPM and then some more at 6000 RPM, if it goes faster shifting it higher then try 6500 RPM Once your in the ball park, 5500 RPM is slower than 6000 and 6500 is slower also then try 5700 and 6300 RPM Find the sweet spot and use that, don't forget that the weather can and will influence your results Bad weather, high DA days shift it lower and good low DA days shift it higher, say 200 to 300 RPM different either way IHTHs

Well didn't get to drive the car, the Wife did and it was her first time down the track.
I told her just put it in drive and punch it.
So with hard as rock Toyo's spinning in first and the car shifting on its own ran a 13.85 @ 96 mph
Nothing broke and we drove it back home and I think she is hooked.
