I,m building a e body street /strip cuda. 470 lo deck stroker. When looking at cam selection they ask what stall convertor. When I look at convertors that ask about the cam/torque. So which would you select first to determine the other.

Still Broke

You have to think of the whole package... so when
you are going to buy a cam you have to have in mind
what conv you plan on going with.. if you started from
scratch then most likely your gonna buy both at the
same time(or close).. so think ahead... but be realistic
since its a street car mainly

You pick the camshaft first, for your combination and the way you're going to drive it, and then match the converter to that...

When the cam company asks about the converter, tell them that you're having one custom built for the combination...

If you can't handle the truth, you're living a lie.......

I would think about what I was willing to drive on the street converter wise. Then order the cam based on that. Then when you have all the specs. for the cam and the rest of the motor combination give all that info to the converter company. I want the converter guy to have all the info so they can set it up where it needs to be.

What I did on my last ride(street/strip) I tried to
set up the total package... what rpm will I want as
a max rpm.. so that takes the gear and tire and conv
slippage to figure that then base the cam on that
and the heads.. I came within 100 rpm but that was
due to the slippage I used was slightly high.. I
had a idea what I wanted for conv stall... when I
started that build I knew what I wanted for ET and
had a good idea what I could build the car to weight
wise..
so base on that calculated what HP was needed and
built on that idea.. it came out with a bit more HP
than I needed but I can slow it down if needed

You guys are thinking strictly track.. thats not
how I think about street/strip cars that mainly
spend their time on the street... but as usual this
is my opinion

On a street car I look at my rear gear and tire height and then work backwards from there.

Same here.. what can I live with for driving RPM

If you want a real streatable combination cam wise with the 508 pump gas rb stroker engine I just called Scott Brow.

He spec'd the hydraulic flat tappet cam and 9 1/2" tc from Ulitimate Convertor concepts. Back in the day I had a 430 rear gear and a 28" drag radial. Extrude honed HP manifolds into 3" TTI pipes and a six pack with carbs from Quick Fuel.

When I got tired of driving the car more on the street with the relatively higher rpm at 60 mph I got on the horn with Scott.

I replaced the rear gear with 294's and a 26" rear tire convertor slippage with the UCC 9 1/2" tc was well withing reason for driving the car more on the street.

How did it run on the street like not a problem no bog off the line and plenty of room to run it out on those highways with no restriction on the speed limit

I normally build the motor for the application and then dyno test it to see where peak torque and peak HP occur at which RPM, I'll send a copy of the dyno sheet to the converter company and tell them how I'm, or the customer, intends to use those parts in that car. I have found out that a really good 8 inch race converter works very well on the street also

I think head flow, rocker arm ratio are 1st. Then select a cam to use the head airflow. Then dyno the engine. adjust your rear gear/tire so your cruise RPM is around peak torque (best BSFC). send info to the converter guy so he/she can nail the converter on the 1st try. you will have a bad street ride.
