I've used the Google machine to it's full extent for a few months and have yet to find an answer, so hopefully someone smarter than me can explain this. My question concerns the launch control on the new 8-speeds. Everything I have read or watched shows launch control, but does not explain it in any detail. You can adjust from 1500-3500 (maybe more?) according to videos I've watched. If it were a dual-clutch, that makes perfect sense as the clutch would just let out at the specified RPM. With the 8-speed having a torque converter, how does it "adjust"? Does it somehow "loosen" the converter for the launch? If set to 3500 RPM does it launch like a clutch drop or like a loose converter? Does that mean it will foot-brake to 3500? At this point, no one has been able to answer this, including owners I have asked, and obviously my dealership has no clue. I am considering pulling the trigger on one in the future and plan to have fun with it at the track. I could see if traction is limited how you could modulated the throttle without LC and get better times. But with a set of slicks at a sticky track, can you set it to 3500+, and hammer out aggressive 60 ft times? Every video or write up I can find shows it as a novelty or bragging point, but nothing further. My limited knowledge about automatics cannot fathom how an automatic with a torque converter could allow that kind of "adjustment" at the push of a button. Anyone have any insight?

Thanks

I'm not exactly sure HOW it works, but, from my limited knowledge, I believe that it doesn't manipulate the torque converter. Just the brakes and gas.

Basically, it sets your brakes and releases them at the specified RPM while modulating the gas. I may very well be wrong, but I believe that's how it works.

I believe Malicious is pretty knowledgeable about it.

I was hoping Malicious would chime in at some point. I'm on the same page as far as throttle and brake goes...but does the trans actually let it foot brake to 3500? If so, that seems pretty loose for day to day driving...and a bit sloshy for most people. I doubt it feels as loose as a 10" converter, but how else would it foot brake to 3500+?

The system controls the brakes and throttle only. You set your RPM to launch at. You put your foot on brake to stop car. You release the brake and mash the throttle the RPM will climb to your set value and then it will release the brake.

Ok. So you are telling me the car holds the brakes all the way to 3500+ RPM. I know my 10" converter will only foot brake to about 2100 RPM. Those must be some incredible brakes.

I found this in literally two minutes.

R.

That makes sense. All of the PR showed LC for auto at 3500+ RPM, when 1850 is actually the limit. The 3500+ is for the 3 pedal cars. I've googled this several times and this article never came up.

Thanks.
