I am looking to upgrade from my 2000 Quad Cab 2500 V10 to a 2010+ 2500, my main reason is to gain more back seat room for the kids. We plan on getting a travel trailer in the 30 foot range next year for family outings. I have been looking and I can either get a fairly low mileage Hemi or a 6.7 Cummins with a few more miles for what I am looking to spend. I know the diesel would be nice on long trips with the camper, but I have read all sorts of horror stories about the emissions stuff on them. This wouldn't be my daily driver, but would see daily use in the winter when my Charger is parked. My drive to work, and anywhere really, is 17 miles of all highway. I like the idea of the diesel, but do you guys think a Hemi might be a better choice?

My last truck was a 2008 6.7 4x4 that I bought new. It was a pretty good truck while I had it, but I deleted all the emissions stuff within the first few weeks. I realize that's not an option for everyone, but the older EGR/DPF trucks were pretty problematic for most. The only thing I had go wrong was the water pump, which is apparently a common Cummins failure. The newer (2012+?) trucks use DEF, I not sure if they're as trouble prone or not?

I ended up getting rid of it after I realized a diesel wasn't right for me.

I have a 2013. Absolutely awesome truck. Zero issues, I have got two tsb's for an abs reflash and a trans reflash. Tow regularly with it. It handles my car trailer, enclosed, like it's not there and the exhaust brake is wonderful.

2013 was the first year of def in the 2500/3500 trucks, but it was used in cab/chassis trucks for several years before. I have not heard of many problems with the systems. The biggest gripe is the def tank uses a sonar type sensor so the gauge isn't linear like typical fuel, but def freezes so you can't you a float setup.

I have never plugged my truck in in my 2 years of ownership. It hasn't been above 10deg here for two weeks nearly and not one issue.

You barely notice regens. I can't recall the last time I even did.

I've heard some guys say they don't tolerate short trips due to not getting enough heat in them too regen-but haven't heard any first hand data to support this.

2013 marked mostly interior and emissions updates. There were 8.4 radio quirks when they came out but most everything has been reflashes and/or a radio replacement and stuffs been solved.

I plan to own mine for 10-15 years, so I do take care of it. But it's a joy to drive/use.
Good luck.

I bought a 2012 1 ton single wheel for my 36' toy hauler. It's heavy. I love the back seat for adults. My kids are bigger now. Love the 6 speed auto and exhaust break. I tow in the mountains and its great. I've had 4 Cummings and this one is the most quiet and pulls the hardest. it does not use DEF.

I drove a 2007 3500 quad cab dually all over the country towing and did have emissions issues, but this was the first year for the 6.7 engine. My biggest problems were the junk G56 6-speed transmissions, went through three of them, and also a South Bend clutch that was junk, thought I had upgraded but I was wrong. If you go diesel buy a 2010 or newer automatic.

if you are going to by a 6.7 do 1 of 2 things
1-if you get a 2007-2012 plan on doing a full delete or you will have egr problems.
2- get a 2013-up with def and drive the he!! out of it and don't worry.

If you're going to be pulling a 30ft travel trailer later with it I sure wouldn't be buying a hemi for doing that. Buy a 2010-12 6.7 AT and you'll never know that thing is behind you! Diesels hold their value and with the EGR deleted you won't have any problems and get better MPG.
