I am restoring a 71 Cuda that is autumn Bronze with a painted grille but the lower grille is silver. The car did come with road lamps and I am told that that makes the difference if the air shield is body color or not. Any input would be apreciated, thanks in advance

An Argent grill gets a silver valance insert. A body colored grill gets a body colored valance insert.

My car is original paint. Doesn't look like anything has ever been repaired in the front but who knows. Do road lamps make a difference? I have a orange car with a painted grille and painted air shield with no road lamps and it has body color shield. I had a guy tell me years ago that when road lamps were ordered the shield was silver. I have seen blue painted grille with a silver shield.

Does your car have L34 on the fender tag ? That will tell you if the road lamps were ordered with your car or not.
Plus what Burdar said is generally the rule of thumb with painted grills.

I bought my GW3 71 Cuda with 6/22 SPD from the orignal owner and it was somewhat untouched, several things lead me to believe that both the upper grille and the lower grille were original to the car. The upper grille was argent and the lower was painted body color without any texture. I have heard others that have found this as well.

I have come to understand that many cars which were supposed to have body color grilles were shipped with argent due to supply shortages. One shortage story I beleive you may be able to find on this forum is the tractor trailer accident in which a shipment of grilles were damaged and got sold at salvage prices.

Bottom line there is no code on the buildsheet to say what color the grille was supposed to be. I prefer color coded grilles so I stripped the grille and painted it body color when I restored the car.
