Thinking about replacing the rotted muffler with straight pipe. Any idea how much louder it will be? I'm happy with quiet, but I'm cheap too! Truck is stock with exception of a Smarty programmer.
Thanks

I was hoping that it wouldn't be much louder with the straight pipe - shouldn't the cat keep it kind of quiet?

Inside the cab with the windows closed you won't notice much, if any difference. Outside it will be a bit louder but not a whole bunch.

It might be louder but, considering the aftermarket stuff folks are running, it shouldn't be a problem.
It depends on how loud you like it. If it's too loud for you, a muffler will be an easy addition.

It will be louder as mentioned, but even my truck without a cat or muffler isn't that loud. I mean it's not headers and 3" exhaust loud at least to me... the turbo quiets some of the noise.

will sound like a big-rig. cool sound, if you don't get tired of it.

...Will sound OK UNLESS you have a load on it such as a camper....Going up a slight grade will cause a pretty significant drone.

My new next door neighbor has a dodge with a diesel and no muffler. I think it sounds like bad, it don't even sound powerful to me. Everyone around can hear when he leaves or comes home.

I'm sure my neighbors would not like my truck that loud since I go to work at 5:30 in morning and let my truck warm up in the driveway 5-6 days a week.

Not IMO. A small diesel will never sound like a big rig.

A friend had an 05 with no cat or muffler. It wasn't crazy loud inside the truck but outside was loud. I sat in the back passenger seat on a road trip pulling a camper trailer and it about drove me nuts. I couldn't hear crap besides the tailpipe. I generally like all things loud but that got old lol.

sounds like bad340fish has a little experience with such animal.
I have an 07 mega cab w/5.9. Straight pipe SUCKED. (This is coming from a guy who's daily driver was a 12.7:1 500" rb w/2" headers and 3" Hpipe,3" ultra flows and turn downs.) In cab drone was unreal. I now run a 5" pipe, short resonator, and 2 big muffs. All are straight thru design. It sounds great outside, in the cab, you can hear it but it is tolerable.
Biggest difference in the cab came from adding a tip that put the end of the exhaust just out/past (2")from the bottom of the bed fender behind the tire.

On my 1999 had just the resonator, sounded good. On the 03 had
a Flowmaster model 40, perfect.

Bad340fish is spot on about them being obnoxious pulling a trailer. I knocked the muffler & converter off of my 06, and after a 1000 mile round trip pulling a 38 ft camper to the sand dunes in Oklahoma, I couldn't get a muffler back on it fast enough. I hated it to say the least. The common rail trucks dont sound anything like the earlier trucks. They have a loud, raspy tone that will likely get on your nerves after awhile. I also would like to think I am pretty tolerant of noise but they are just too loud for my taste.

Cheap is good, how about free?

If you have'nt done anything yet take a trip behind some of the Dodge dealers: the odd Gullible individual who spent too much time believing what he read on the internet will have their brand-new exhaust hacked off and thrown in the metal bin out back to put some gay-sounding aftermarket thing on.

I've picked up more than a few this way and it's free (with permission from the shop hands).

Craigslist is always a great place to find stock parts that people have replaced with aftermarket junk. There is always factory exhaust systems and air intakes for cheap on the local CL here in metro Detroit...

are there any "tricks" to increasing "turbo whine" ? I don't want the loose, ratty, crappy sound of a straight pipe cummins, but I love to hear my turbo whistle!
