OK, 03 T & C. On occaision it acts like tranny is not in gear. Shifter is in position, and after a few seconds tranny seems to "catch" and go on. No grinding or whirring noises like gears not engaged, engine just picks up RPM and it doesn't move. I'm thinking the control solenoid is heading south. 150K miles on van. Any other ideas/suggestions? And how much of a dog is this to change, and what "oopsies" shoudl I look out for?

Yup, trans serviced at 75K and 130K.

I had only asked as I saw it alot over the years on rear wheel drive when you need to check the fluid level in Neutral and not park (its lower in neutral on RWD because of pump system flow) and many checked the RWD in park where it can be a good qt low but read full in park since the pumps not flowing in park. But on front wheel drive you can check it in park so sounds like you are good. But your symtoms are just like low fluid level where it just feels like it goes in neutral and then goes back in gear without you doing anything. Ron

Question does it do this when first started only or does it happen while driving along ?

Thanks for the reply Ron. I know, you have to ask the simple questions, I ask them too when trouble-shooting equipment in the foundry. AS to the occurrances, it seems to happen in the 1st 5 or 10 minutes of a trip. Once your out on the road all seems well. And a prolonged warm-up in either park or neutral (assuming the tranny pump is engaged in neutral) does not seem to have an effect. Does anyone know if the ttansmission control module is a chronic problem in these things? I wonder about the location (behind front inner fender), or would a problem there set a code?

Well here's the thing. You could actually unhook the trans module electrical connection and it would still go right in gear and would stay in a forward or reverse gear without any electronics working. It would just be in the limp mode where you would have second gear in drive and reverse as they are like a fail safe where if all electronics fail you could still drive it some. The second and reverse gears will work on just the hydraulics. We had problems with cold delayed engaugements in the mornings on many that had pump problems and sometimes you could start the vehicle in the morning or after it sat about 6 or more hrs and then put it in gear (drive or reverse) and it would not go in as it would just sit there for a few minutes sometimes and sometimes reving it up a little might help it go in gear sooner. Many pumps had to much clearence and cause this problem along with a downshift clunk on some. What would happen was that when you put it in gear the trans module counts how long it takes to engauge the clutch pack and the delayed going into gear would run the CVI clutch count up high which could also cause it to bang on a downshift at times as the high CVI count would make the trans controller duty cycle the solenoid to engauge the clutch faster with a high CVI count.
But this problem was usually always a problem when first started after sitting. For your trans to act like neutral its either a low pressure problem (pump bad , low fluid) or a torque converter problem. But if it set a low pump pressure code it would usually be a pump or low fluid type problem. Ron

Did you use a factory filter when serviced ?

I used a aftermarket filter on a service and the o-ring and the height of the filter wasn't quite exact - caused filter to loose prime

Changed back to oem filter - no more issues and that was about 60k miles ago

agreed,
also, ck the pan for signs of damage and/or bent in . The filter is right against the pan once installed and the slighest dent cracks the filter causing issues described
