Is there an easy way to see the difference?

Yes, look at the hose between the water pump and the head. On a 225 you can replace it without pulling the head, on a 170 you cannot.

Never messed with them till a couple years ago but, the 225 motors (and maybe the others, too) have it stamped right into the block, towards the front, pass side, on the deck. It's right next to the head. Probably have to scrape some grease/paint to see it.

This is the correct answer.
The 225 is a raised block, like the 440 VS the 383.
Easy to spot if you've seen both.
Go over to Allpar to the slant six page and you will be able to see the difference in the illustrations. Note that one is mislabelled!
They don't like linking the pics, so it's easier to just go over and look.

The 198 and 225 blocks are taller than the 170 by 1.5". All 3 use the same piston, different rod lengths are used to account for the various stroke and deck heights.

The hose mentioned above;
170 - 1.5"
225 - 3.0"

yep, either 225 or 198. On the 170 those two hose clamps would almost be touching.
