How do you do it without a T Bar removal tool? I've heard you don't want to score the bars. Is there a nifty trick? Mine MAY just pop out because the car hasn't had weight on it since the whole front was rebuilt.

I’m listening.

Spray them down good for a couple of days... give
them a couple of hard whacks from the rear with a drift
and BFH... then you should be able to slide them out

Which body style are you working on? I've only change them on A bodys, which requires that they slide out the back of the trans. cross member first before removing the LCA so you can then slide them out the front after seperating them from LCA(you need to remove the LCA strut at the same time when removing the LCA I ended up scoring mine by using vise grips and shop rag wrapped around the bars and driving them out with a hammer Don't do that I did file the marks off with a fine file Looking back I should have removed the retaining snap ring in the trans cross member and then remove the nut on the LCA stud and use the nut to help drive the stud backwards out of the engine K member which would have driven the torsion bar out of the tranny crossmember Don't forget to back all the tension off the torsion bar adjuster screw first before starting IHThs

Shocking them from the rear is just to break them free,
they still have to come out the rear after the snap
ring is removed
EDIT
I made up a 2" round alum block with the center bored
thru the dia of the bars then slit it in half length
wise .. drilled and tapped 2 holes and clamped it
on the bar so I could hit the alum.. worked great

Clamp whatever it is that you will beat on at the rear of the torsion bar near the cross member. You won't do much good if you clamp up front.

I've always just used a couple of 1" rope clamps. Doesn't hurt the bars and gives a good surface for the hammer.

Master, again and still

Also, after backing all the tension off the torsion bar adjuster, you may need to remove the bump stop to get enough travel on the control arm to allow it to come out.

I usually pop the t bar clip, undo the LCA strut and the LCA pin nut, THEN I back off the torsion bar adjuster and use a pickle fork between the K frame and LCA and pry the LCA backwards. Never had one stuck yet. No special clamps or tools needed.

Sixpak: Exactly, but I get tired of typing it here and have guys over think it anyway.

You want to undo the upper shock mount also. Once ALL the torsion is taken off the bar it will pretty much just slide out as long as its not rusted in place !!

As has been said, loosening the lca pin nut and knocking the pin free from the Kframe should unload any residual torsion from the bushing. The pickle fork works but so does any pry bar you can fit in there. You can back the nut off to the end of the pin and knock/pry the lca until the nut catches it if you need to, that's usually far enough to free the rear hex from the socket. Before I resort to that I usually just grab the stubborn bar just behind the lca socket, press on the socket with my thumb and whack on the bar with a soft mallet. It actually works a lot of the time. You may have to beat on it a while but you can feel the progress once it starts to move I've thought it would be nice if Chrysler had drilled/tapped a hole in the end of the bar so you could get ahold of it from behind with a slide hammer (or even claw hammer) and just pull on the thing. I've never tried drilling such a hole but I expect you'd need a carbide bit and perhaps a drill press. Even then, tapping might be impossible once the bar is heat treated. I took a bar to a heat treater for hardness testing and it measured at around Rockwell 45. That's over 200,000psi, closely matching a number I came up with based on vehicle weight and bar dimensions.

If you have some scrap aluminum plate 3/8 or thicker laying around, two pieces about three by four inch with four holes drilled in them in about a 2x3 pattern will work. clamp the plates around the T bar so the long side is the place to hit, torque with an air wrench till the plates bend, hit with a BFH. No need for anything but removing the retaining ring. It might slide a bit on the T bar, so retorquing might be needed. this works on about any stuck T bar. The plates will twist on the T bar, but it helps them bite more.

I've had success, prying the tension arm up or down, after the adjustment bolt has been backed flush to the nut. The other methods mentioned work as well. I used the Miller tool in the 70's, and it was quick and effortless.
