OK guys...I'm looking to purchase an 8 track radio for a 70 Challenger application, I have several available to choose from...seeing this is to be a "correct restoration", I know what the answer is as far as the application and what a "correct" radio should be...BUT?

This for an extremely early build 70 Challenger, the question is: is this AM FM 8 track (pictured for reference only) a possible/correct early 70 application?, the lower 8 track plastic trim is indeed 70 Challenger only, but the radio?

Thanks
Mike

Nope, sorry, no AM FM 8-track ever for the E body .
Only option is # 2884610 AM 8-track .
I have a run down of all the available E body radio from 70-74 on my site for refrence..

Call it what you want, early production, and keep dreaming.

The radio pictured is incorrect for an E-body. They are thumbwheel operation with solid chrome puchbuttons.

If you are asking if you could "shoehorn" a C body radio into an E body dash ? Sure, but using the pic above as an example , the 1970 E body 8-track would have been a thumbwheel, not a knob style radio, E bodies never had a slide bar that looked like that, E bodies never had push buttons that looked like that, E bodies never had a dial face that looked like that, so everything that is visable , is incorrect for an E body application. And, of course the mounting points and antenna port locations are diffrent , but not noticable once installed. If you are going for any kind of correct look , I would steer clear of those C body radios .

Greg, thanks for your input, I'm totally aware the "correct" application is an AM thumbwheel 8 track...I've been "doing" E bodies for close to 40 years, the reason I ask about the above pic, is it's taken from a 1970 HEMI Challenger, never restored, well documented, and under 1000 original miles, being a very early build (let's just say it's VIN is lower than 100030) is it a possibility this AM/FM 8 track made it into this vehicle from the factory?

I'm no expert on these but that is one weird looking radio.
I have not seen them all, but I thought an AM/FM with that slider was not available until after 71 and I was under the impression there was no 8 track after 70, so what is that radio correct for
Mike, if you can see the paper tag on the radio that carries the part number and date code it may answer your question as to its' application.

So, the above picture is from the dash of the "Diamante" - hand built pre-production (at Clairpointe?). What SALES CODE does the shipping invoice say it had for a radio when new?

..... at least its original steering wheel is there

The Diamonte was built from a running driving Hemi Challenger Convertible. To build the sloped nose, the front inner fenders were cut. And those sections contained the fender tag which is missing/removed.

When was the Diamonte actually built? I'd assume after Spring 1970?

Didn't it get a color change while on the show circuit? When was that? How many years was it on the show circuit?

I'd think changes/updates could have happened anytime while on the show circuit. Especially when it got repainted orange.

IIRC:
started life as a pre-production black HEMI Challenger R/T convertible (built ~5-69)
modified into the "Yellow Jacket" show car
modified into the white "Diamante" show car - repainted orange at some point (currently back to white)

hardly an un-modified "survivor"

Yes correct R22 radio code on orig MSO

the car also has prototype 72-4 challenger taillight lenses

like previously mentioned, it was on the show car circuit til the mid 70s and parts got changed as the car got changed along the way

while the whole car hasn't been restored since its show car years,

it was heavily modified twice by Chrysler, then repainted by Chrysler, then Steve J had it repainted back to white

the customizers took liberties with the show cars and so did Chrysler as they liked to option up the cars for the show circut

Thanks Tony, so to beat the dead horse again could the radio (AM/FM 8 track) have been a pre production item?, perhaps like the steering wheel mentioned? or these items added later?

We've all seen, read or heard of pre production items, or items never intended for production making themselves out on early production or pilot cars, like half ring horns on early 70 E bodies, chrome slap stik shifters on early 70 E, bodies, cruise control on Shaker 6 bbl inductions, emblems where they shouldn't be regardless of factory specs/prints/drawings/memos/etc, combinations of options that aren't suppose to co-exists,...although the radio in question looks like a 71 C body, and I thought the same when I was looking for 70 E body dash/radio lay outs for reference, I thought this may be by chance an early production/pilot exercise on the E body platform?

Mike,
I don't think so.

Some of the early E-Bodies 100001-100100 had the R22 option. Not many.
Speculating that an R22 radio was ordered new to this particular hemi Challenger, I would venture to say it was replaced early in in the car's life.

Here is a picture of 100003 R22 radio. A car, theoretically built extremely early, and yet, still has a "standard" R22 radio.
