Depends on what chamber head has, what carbs, cam etc
Old stock iron heads like about 38 degrees total
More modern chambers like a tad less--dome pistons want more, many bad azz Edelbrock style engines will make more HP on the dyno with 40 degrees total
Six pack carbs Must have lots of initial like 18 plus range, same with most bigger cams so...
factory made dozens of timing combos over the years and that was with wimpy cams so...
Most hot 440's that leave the shop here have MSD's so we ALWAYS use the black stop bushing with one lite silver and one lite blue spring--covers 90% of them --they will have 15-18 degrees initial and 38 total set--they will idle like a pussycat no matter the cam etc
Just my

I'm running a Eddy headed 383 with .484 purple shaft cam. Timing is 18 deg initial and 36 total. MSD ignition with one light blue spring, and 1 light silver.
