checked the distributor .. it's still nice and tight.. all I did last night was pull a couple plugs and see that they look like this .. I did check in with the guy who dyno'd it and he's thinking it may be caused by the winter fuel mixture here in CA - says a lot of guys' cars run like crap on it..and the deposits on the plugs are most likely from the crappy gas. and now that the weather is cooler (70's), it might be running a bit leaner .. he's going to check his notes from our tune and give me a recommendation on different metering rods to help the AF ratio.

Unrelated .. something is spraying on the front drivers side of the engine ... not sure where it's coming from ... there's not really anything over there! White deposits from... something.

"something is spraying on the front drivers side of the engine"

Hope it is not a head gasket leaking from that side of the motor

Those plugs would be steamed clean if that was the case.

Bring it to OT, and get the pressure-tester out...

I did a little work this weekend on a 1994 Mazda truck I have as it was running a little rough, the plugs looked identical to your pictures. My first thought was the gas. New blend for our west coast green states ? coolant level is right where it is supposed to be. Put new plugs and wires on runs much better. Plugs only had about 4k miles on them.

The fuzzyness is from fuel additives

Now I need to pin those needles, got to feel that heat

... Or oil additives. I have seen similar on an engine with lose valves, poor seals and high oil consumption.

That's what I'd do, pump it up to 15 when hot and do a compression test. I believe that'll uncover something

can you please explain? I thought the pressure tester was for the cooling system? How will doing a cooling system pressure check while doing a compression check show something?

I guess that you missed the post regarding the white specks on the engine and it possibly being a coolant issue. A cooling system pressure check may display a leak which may have led to the white specks.

OK... I can understand how doing a cooling system pressure check would help determine if that's an issue.. but how could doing a compression check at the same time show something? Just trying to understand what I'd be looking for ...thanks!

Think I may have found a culprit..

I decided to pull all the plugs to look at them (and replace them).. 7 of them looked like the images I posted previously.. then there was this one..

Am I correct in surmising that this was not firing? It was in the cylinder at the back of the engine on the drivers' side.. the hardest spark plug boot to get to, since the power brake booster is right in the way, and the plug boot rests against the header (I have fiberglass heat insulation boot on the plug boot)..

Cal we were sayin to do the compression test AND the coolant pressure test (not at the same time). Not sure if the plug ain't firing or if it is fouled but I'd toss another one in (other 7 wouldn't hurt also) & see how it acts & I'd still do the pressure and compression tests cuz didn't you say earlier that something up front was sprayin out on the fender? EDIT I reread & it DID sound like I was sayin to do both at the same time

Looks oil fouled

if you're getting gassed while driving, you have bigger problems. find out why the exhaust is coming into the cabin, before it takes you out. then fix it.

My Challenger had the same problem. Ended up being a hole in the piston. Do a compression test

Had the same problem with my 440. Turned out to be a large vacuum leak around the intake manifold. Dribble some soapy water or spray some WD40 all around the intake manifold where it meats the heads while the motor is running. Should be able to see if there is a leak.
