I've noticed the last couple times I've driving the Dart (mild 360), the exhaust is getting really potent - burns the back of my throat when I'm driving .. it's also got a little bit of a stumble off the line, and every now and then if I jump on the gas after sitting at a stop light, it'll give a pop out the carb.. sounds to me like timing? I had it running really good, no stinky exhaust.. but lately I've been noticing it getting worse.

pull a spark plug, take a pic and post it. i'll bet it's running rich.

Sounds rich.

Check into a wide-band o2 gauge and/or recorder. Step into the 21st century and forget looking at plugs.

I'd need to put one in each header, right? I've been thinking about this, actually

once the engine cool off, I'm going to pull a plug or two.. but I had it tuned a few months back, and we got the AF ratio dialed in really well and I haven't changed anything in the carb since then (Edelbrock Performer 600 cfm)

Ideally, yes.

But one could assume matching jets and idle screws on both banks would get you close on the unmonitored bank. Even that way, you'll be able to fine tune idle, part-throttle cruise, and WOT far more efficiently than reading plugs.

I wouldn't hesitate to buy something like an LM2 duo, or similar, if I was going to be running a carb'd car down the road. Log inductive RPM, each banks A/F and i think engine temp or a couple other parameters could be monitored with that.

Per your experience, a mild cammed engine should not be stinky. Good idea to check ignition first. Visual inspection of cap, rotor, distributor and plugs. Check timing also. If the wires are old, replace. It may well be a carb problem, but best eliminate ignition first.

Too rich or too lean could make it gassy. A lean misfire, the cyl is too lean to fire but the unfired (even tho lean) mixture which is still potent enough then goes out the tailpipe & you smell it. Yes an LM1 would be state of the art for tuning but something is deteriorating/going bad unrelated to your current jetting cuz it was running OK before now it ain't. lets find/fix it. I never discount a basic compression/leakdown tests then I'd start with the plugs/plug wires for a possible misfire culprit (& rotor phasing/radial gap may be borderline) & float level/saturated for a rich condition. Holler how it turns out. EDIT reread & saw the hesitation, I'm thinking lean misfire, vac leak maybe

Tool to be used on a car that's how expensive? For how many years?

It'd be an investment, and you can certainly get by with just the tool and a single wideband though. If you forsee messing with carbs for a while, it's not a bad way to go.

Have some friends run O2 bungs in their cars and split the cost, rent it to them, etc. three cars over three years would be $72/car/year to tune with the best thing out there. It doesn't sound so bad that way.. Log at the track, on the road, summer, winter, etc. having that data available is really handy.

I usually find a way to make specialty tools pay for themselves

One thing, dual planes feed two cylinders on each side of the engine. Single planes feed all eight from a common plenum. Monitoring one side will tell you something about both sides of the carb regardless.

OK.. plugs are a little white ... and .... 'fuzzy'...

And gas is fine.. I fill it up about every other week, I've put 5k miles on it in the last 10 months...

Looks either a tad rich or the heat range is a step cold.

Offers have been made to you on several occasions from people not too far from you but you don't seem to want to take them up on it. Your thread regarding the tuning before dyno day was one example. The fuel issues you had could have been fixed within a couple of hours if you would have tapped your local resources. If you continue to ignore the offers, they will surely cease to exist.

I'm no expert on reading spark plugs but that looks super lean to me! If it were running rich, the plug would be black and sooty.
