I plan on having my rims soda blasted and painted to clean them up and since I'm new to this market I thought $500.00 for blasting and painting was a bit high. Am I wrong? I don't mind paying people for their work but I don't want to get ripped off either. I'll look around for others to do the work but I wanted to get a baseline of sorts.

I just had 4 15x7 rallye rims blasted and powdercoated for $300 and I thought it was a bit high.

What type of rims are we talking about. Are they rust-free, 'cause soda won't touch rust. If they're done with soda then they have to be properly cleaned afterwards for the paint to stick.

I guess what I'm getting at is have you done your research or are you just reading magazine articles and figure soda and paint is the hot ticket.

Whatever the case, I think you could have a dozen rims blasted and painted for $500.00 and expect change !!

I have a sand blaster, a high school kid (not mine) and charge $25 ea but I am not doing show quality work with top notch paint, just making them look better/last longer for winter tires. Did 3 sets today and they look like new

The rims are stock on my 68 GTS. Yes, there is a little surface rust on them and I have evapo-rust to take care of it.

My research consist of many sources including you. My mention of soda was mainly based on research and recommendations for something that will not remove metal as I want the original surface and to preserve all markings on the rims. From what I've read I do remember that soda has to be properly cleaned off before painting.

I want paint to keep the rims original looking.

If there is a better media to use please enlighten me. Like I said and I'm learning. Any help is appreciated.

Just have them sand blasted and then paint right over that and don't touch them after sand blasting them before paint.

It will not hurt the stampings in the rims.
I have sand blasted many, many rims over the years with sand and coal slag. Like about 50 or more and even big truck rims. I did 24 mopar rims all at once a few years ago.

Don't mess around with chemicals and soda if you have rust.

Did I mention not to touch them after blasting before paint?

On the price...what kind of paint is being used? With today's paint cost 500 is not that bad. Maybe sand blasting would be cheaper than soda? It would be for me, because I sand blast all the time.

I had the 17" wheels on my 2000 dodge blasted and powder coated satin black a few months back. The blasting was 80.00 for all the wheels inside an outside. The powder coating was 50.00 per wheel for a total of 200.00.
With that being said depending on what they were going to do to your wheels material for paint and body can get very high quick. If they were going to have to prime and block the wheels to remove pits and such then use base clear to refinish them that can run in to a lot of time and money.

Yes and I mean it don't need to be wiped off with lacquer thinner or anything like that before painting if they are media blasted and not soda blasted. Just blow em off with a air hose and prime.

If they are completely blasted clean, pits sanded out, correctly painted and they are ready to bolt on a show car, this is a great price.
If just some what blasted, wiped with vaporust , and shot with a spray bomb....Not so much!

I charge at least $100 - $150 per wheel and this is the result.. stripped and blasted...

These were all sand blasted.

I sand blasted all these rims and you can still see the stamping. Any rusting is going to leave pit's nothing you can do about that IMO.

If you get them blasted make sure you or someone else is SURE to get something sharp and dig all of the sand out of the pinch areas between the centers and the rims. If you don't you'll see all the boogers when painted over, looks like azz when done that way.

I have been using Les Schwab for years. Just took in 8 this summer and the price was $26.50 each. That was for blasting, acid washing and powder coating. Guy said all the stores can do it but most don't know they offer that service. I used the one in South Seattle as they do lots of semi truck wheels. They sent them to their facility in Oregon and it took about a week. A little secret I tell people when they complain about paying $50 just to have one blasted. Until the one guy started scamming people with the "just spent $500 having these wheels blasted and powder coated. Will sell for $400."
