I purchased a very nice used dash pad for my 74 RR, it is the orginal black in color and it will stay black,I want to recolor it black, sense its a job to replace, I just don't know if it should be satin black, flat black or gloss black? I purchased duplicolor adhension promoter, and a can of duplicolor gloss black vinyl and fabric color. Can anyone inform me as to what color black that it should be??

Out of the choices you gave, I think it should be satin finish. Gloss could cause a glare on a dash.

I always used Dupont vinyl paint. It can be mixed in a low, medium, or high gloss. I always used 'medium gloss' on the dash pads. 'Low gloss' is pretty flat.

X2

Although it might not be as much of an issue with black as it would be with other colors.

Personally I have had very good luck with the SEM products.

I have been using SEM landeau black for years. Perfect match and I have never had any problems with it.

X3. SEM's Landau Black works & looks great on dashpads and is
easy to apply. About ready to dye my 71 Power Wagon's pad with it
as well.

What about a dash pad that's dry? Should it softened with a good leather dressing before painting?

No No No!!!! Don't put anything on there before painting it will not stick.
Clean it really well with lacquer thinner and then shoot with 3 light to medium coats.

No dressing. I use SEM's Soap then either laquer thinner (I've even used
Windex) & then spray 3 or 4 light coats of SEM's landau black.
