03 Jeep Liberty, no reverse, came back for awile then lost reverse again. No codes. Replaced soleniod pack, found accumulator plate bent and distorted. straightened and replaced missing screws. I also replaced the three seals between the valve body and trans case. No help, still no reverse. What next? I have rebuilt several 727s before but never in a 45 RFE.

Thanks

Lee

That trans has a dedicated Reverse clutch, an air test might pinpoint it as the problem.

45RFE ( and it's variants ) share nothing with a 727 ( and it's variants) This thing needs all kinds of special tools to overhaul. especially the tool to install the ft pump cover

45RFE is basically a 604 based transmission turned lengthwise.

IMO, have it ck'd with a DRB and do a clutch test and a CVI test ,,but my gut says it needs opened up.

From what I remember the 45RFE needs no electronics for reverse as its one of the limp mode gears and in reverse all electronics are off as its all mechanical and hydraulic. And it uses the reverse clutch and the low/reverse clutch. I remember some of them breaking the screws in the acumulator plate and leaking fluid internaly past some of the acumulators causing pressure drop in some gears. I would pull the valve body and and air test the reverse clutch as John said. Its a good idea to check codes also. You may have to pull the trans to fix it. Ron

The reverse and low reverse clutches are on in reverse. I would suspect the reverse clutches, fairly typical.
Do yourself a favor and install a Transgo Kit which will come with a heavier accumulator plate for the VB, but most importantly will come with a spring and ball to replace the converter limit valve assy in the pump which will be worn out.
Also, find a reputable trans shop to install an oversize switch valve plug assy in the VB, major wear there which will eventually kill the OD clutches.
Yes, it is coming out.

Thanks for the replys..
Trans is out and apart...
All clutchs air checked good and clutchs look great.
Accumulator plate was badly bent and distorted. Broken screws but no screw heads in the pan. someone was in here before me. Am I missing something in the valvebody? Item #14 low/rev switch valve or # 15 low/rev switch valve bore plug. I only have one part here.

Close up....
Is this the low/rev switch valve or the low/rev switch valve bore plug?

A Transgo Kit will give you a new #14 and 15 FYI.

Thanks for the info, which kit, the 45RFE-HD or the SK-45RFE. Which one do you recommend?

Lee
