I am not sure if I need to put on a 440 six barrel decal or a coyote duster decal on the orange air cleaner for a 70 440 six barrel road runner air grabber car I am working on...Which is it?

Thanks!!

I have had my 440 six pack 70 RR since 1975.
It was one of the early 70 six pack cars which had the aluminum intake manifold. It also had the "69" decal.

Never seen an air grabber car with the front shield before.

Bob

PS My car is also an LA built car, first sold on Dec 23. Don't remember build date. RT

So we have seen it with the 440 six barrel decal, the 69 coyote duster decak and now the 70 coyote duster decal. With the shield and without.

Oh boy....

The shroud would be a process error on an N96 car. I've seen that on one other original car.

Make that at least 3, then.

My car's build date is 7/24 & I always assumed it had the wrong air cleaner because of the last day of production. It has some other oddities, too. Anyway, that's the air cleaner it's had since it left the dealership, new, at Fort Bragg. I did forget to mention, my lid did not have that little rectangular decal in the middle on it when new. Don't see how you could be wrong placing decals on one like in the Motor Trend picture. Can't argue with a 39 year old magazine picture!

OK this is bizarre. The car in the article was sold in CA, your car was sold in CA and the car that I know of was a 70 Hemi Coronet R/T sold in CA.

Question. When you close the hood, how close is the shield to the air box gasket? When I had my 70 6pk Bee it came without an air cleaner. The base I had with the shield would catch on the gasket.Had to remove the shield.

Seems like it could be a couple of things. A mistake, done several times at least or, LA ran out of correct air cleaner bases occasionally. I say occasionally because my car is the last built '70 6bbl rr I can find and the one in the magazine is probably a fairly early one.

My last 'best guess' is it had something to do with the noise reduction package, mandatory on CA cars. I can't remember riding in another 70, ag car & listening for carb noise @ WOT but when mine was bone stock, (muffs & res) you could never hear the carbs open, with the scoop down. Guess it's just one of those things I'll never know.

No 'catching' issue although you can feel the gasket graze the shield when you open & close it very slowly. It's the original gasket & has no damage at all. The only rub/wear spots are the perimeter of the base, where the gasket rides normally.

Looks like I'm not the only one - my '70 Coronet R/T has that shield and Ram Charger. It is a very original car - still had original hoses and plug wires when I got it. I knew it wasn't right but could not figure out why a car so original whould have the wrong base. Must be a factory error. I'm leaving it... BTW it does not hit/rub the air box. Sept '69 Lynch Road car. Dave.

Did the car go to California when new? Does it have N95 & N97?

How about N97?? --------- Maybe the 6bbl & HEMI cars required the "more restrictive??" air cleaner base with the "shield" as part of the "NOISE REDUCTION PACKAGE". I imagine there was some negotiations between automakers and CA to "conform" to their regulations/wishes. The non-fresh air 383 "MAGNUM" & 440 "SUPER COMMANDO" lost their un-silenced '68-'69 style air cleaner for the dual snorkle "new for '70" air cleaner.

I'm thinking the 383 4bbl, 440 4bbl, & 440 6bbl b-bodies with N97 may have required resonators only if "tips" were ordered??

Who has a b'cast sheet that can add or confirm info??

The 70 parts book shows the resonators as part of the noise reduction package, but the intake section shows the same part number lower air cleaner body, or "retainer", as the same for all fresh air packages. Oddly, the factory parts book I have only lists a separate functional air scoop B body retainer for Belvedere but not Coronet. Typo?

Also, LA built cars didn't have build sheets, correct?

I do. I have a California 70 Superbee Coupe 440+6 with tips. I'll check the build sheet when I get home. I'm in China currently.

Some LA assembled cars do have b'cast sheets (1 in 10, 1 in 20? ). What I've heard is they (LA) had a "clean car" policy, they didn't leave any trash in customer cars including b'cast sheets???

from the same '70 coronet post:

Quote:

1970 b-body - b'cast sheet tailpipe codes LT & RT:

OVER THE AXLE w/TURNDOWNS
03 & 10 (part #s 3404 003 & 3404 810) w/ N41 on:

440 4bbl Charger R/T, 440 4bbl Coronet R/T
440+6bbl Road Runner, 440+6bbl Superbird
------ also on a N41 & N95 440 4bbl Charger R/T

OVER THE AXLE w/RESONATORS & N42 - "CHROME TIPS"

Anybody have a '70 b-body b'cast sheet with N97 - "noise reduction"??
or a combination not covered above

Sorry, no build sheet in mine, carpet, behind/under seats or above glove box. Looked every where I could without taking seat upholstery clear off or above the headliner. The other 2 LA cars I have/had had none either & I completely reupholstered those. Here's a little better shot of my tag, though.
