I had to notch all eight pistons in the bracket motor I making, I hate to have to do that The motor is a 4.300 stroke 440 block with a 4.350 bore, custom Diamond pistons with the cam specs. provided to them. The intakes had over .200 V to P, the exhaust had zero on number one, it has a new exhaust valve, and .006 on number 6 with the origianl exhaust vavle, the other six pistons had similar V to P as number six did. This picture is the before notching I bought the valve notching tool and guide from Isky I had finished notching all the others when I thought of taking and posting this, look at number 5 in this picture for a comparision

I've done this before, I got the tooling from lindy and took about 4 hours taking my time.

did you just buy the one size tool Cab? i have a stock piston 383 with eheads that i changed directions on and would like to put a bigger cam in. unfortunately it's completely assembled and i'm probably too lazy to pull the front and heads to notch the pistons. it would only need a couple tiny eyebrows to clear any cam i'd like to put in it. i know it's splitting hairs but that would affect the balance a tiny bit.

those tools are pricy

Rented the tool from Hughes Engines to do my small block.

Went through the same thing with Ross awhile back. I gave them all the specs/valve drop/etc. I still had to send them back for more cutting for depth AND radial clearance.

I use to have several Isky cutters, I have one left now, a 2 inch I still have two 3/8 guides. I needed and ordered a 11/32 guide and a 1 7/8 cutter for the 1.81 exhaust valves, that give me around .0325 lateral side clearances I rechecked all eight V to P clearances, good thing I did , most where .080+, #1 had .060 and #6 had.050 so I will cut a little more on them in the morning to get them all within .005 of each other I did find that one of the Indy rockers has around .035 more net lift(.720) than the others do Me thinks it might be a 1.6 ratio rocker instead of 1.5 like the rest, it is on #6 All the rest had between .675 to .692 net lift The challenges of building race motors, there be gremlins out there As far as rebalancing the motor I probally removed less than 2 grams from each piston, maybe less than one gram I've seen more oil weight differences than that I'm not worrying about the weight differences now
