The conventional wisdom I've read for decades is that UV radiation from sunlight drives the plasticizer from the vinyl and as that happens the vinyl gets hard and eventually cracks. If you took a new dash pad (or one in great condition) and dyed it, would the dye protect the vinyl from the UV radiation and prevent the pad from cracking?

dont know about the dye but for UV protection,in my opinion 303 protectant is hands down the best:

I use 303 protectant on everything. Works great.
Get it at napa.
