I don't put relays under the hood. All but the fuel pump are under the dash.

My pump relay is within 10" of the fuel pump, my water
pump and fan relays are about 18"... I do use relays
for the head lights but dont need them after I changed
head light styles(went to led and halogen) but I
wired the front before I changed styles so I just kept
them there... I also use a constant duty solenoid
to supply the power to all the front end stuff so
it has 1 larger power wire to the front end... this
is on my Rampage... on the race car the relay are still
near the draw but no constant duty solenoid(less junk
to fail)

I have the big draw relays close to the source, FP relay in the back, Fan relay up front but they are trigged with the ARC 8000 switch panel.

Sure looks nice ... but WHY put all the relays there..
relays should be near the draw and run a small trigger wire

Because that is a Relay "center" from Painless......I would rather have all my relays in one spot, than all over the car. I believe all new cars also have a central relay source..........Plus, when having the relay close to the "draw", you still have to run power to that relay in a heavy enough gauge wire to handle to amps of the draw. So whats the diff if the long wire is on the draw side, or the supply side?

I wire a lot of cars and I think you are way over thinking this deal. Wiring a car from scratch is actually pretty easy if you have an understanding of how things work, have some patience and mostly have a PLAN.

For relays and stuff, MANY companies have very nice relay centers already set up and you just terminate from there. I personally use the ones from "Leash" electronics. You can order with any mix of ground or hot relay outputs if desired. It is potted, fused and ready to go.

For a ground, you can do your own "floating" ground setup. Take a strip of fairly thick copper, about an inch wide and six inches long. Put several 3/8 and 5/16 holes in it. These will be your ground lugs. Now mount the strip to the chassis on rubber isolators. The ground cable comes from battery to strip and all items ground to strip. A "to the chassis" ground system is actually one of the poorest setups you can have, yet people continue to do it and wonder why they have wiring issues.

I wire most everything with the "floating" setup I described above, but especially on EFI cars, where clean grounds and RFI noise are big concerns

This is a dragster bulkhead I wired a couple years ago with a nice Painless relay and fuse center. We spread the stuff out over the bulkhead, that in case of an issue it would be easy to look at and diagnose

I like the central relay's, keeps it simple in my mind and away from water and heat sources. My fuel pump one is probably the closest and only relay not under the dash.

So some good idea's. I haven't pulled the trigger on anyhting, but want to just re-wire the whole car. Anyone have a diagram they used they can post?

Take some time, sit down and make your OWN diagram. Its your car, you alone know what circuits you need..........so draw it out and start stringing wire. You can speed the process a little by retaining the factory head and tail section wiring. I mean lights are lights, if they are working, leave them alone. I usually install a terminal strip under the dash on the drivers side and run the factory head and tail harnesses to that. Clean, color coded and easy to tie into with new switches. The under dash and under hood wiring on older cars is usually where the issues are, not in the lighting

As mentioned before, its the factory wiring that is the culprit. My wiring is working ok, but its a mess of colors and will need to be redone too. So nothing will stay unfortunetly except for the fuel pump wiring.

I know need the pin out for the steering column though...

Here is a K&R system I did on a car not too long ago.

I have used many different systems and they all have their ups and their downs. I have hand built wiring harnesses and sometimes that is what you have to do in order to get everything exactly the way you want it but many times it is easier to deal with something that is already made and use it to the best of your ability even if it has just a little more than you need. Monte that is a really nice looking set up you did! And like said before thank you for all of your input on here. Even I learn quite a bit from you even about wiring and that is what I do. Every time you see the way someone else does something you pick up on things and rethink the way you do it to make yourself better.

Page 12 is a chart that should be the same color codes as the factory wiring coming out of your column.
