87 truck manual shows the voltage regulator as being "center of dash panel" and if it does not have electronic spark control the ballast & ignition module are shown as being "left side of dash panel" I assume a 88 would be similar

Does it have fuel injection? It started around that time.

Look tucked in behind/under the battery/fender area I used to have an 87 D150. All the lean burn stuff was in there. An astonishing number of wiring problems turned out to be tracable to the bulkhead connector (where all the wires go thru the firewall in a bunch with a bolt holding them in).

Your description is what a normal 88 tbi v6 or 318 is like. No ballast, No VR, its all in the ecm behind the battery in the fender.

corret. I have a 88 that has been converted from tbi-pcm to a elect vac dist with ecu wired in the 88 harness.(all tbi/pcm wire removed) also has the VR wired into the harness and is mounted by driver side hood hinge area.

the lights/dimmer/blinkers/wiper are all on turn sig switch with a muti function switch. nothing but crap under the dash on 88-93

would this also cause it to be intermittent running rough and then running fine and making it hard to start like it is not getting spark?

yes, the ecu will act up by itself/short out or fail by not getting signals from the other parts of the system.

there are some relays for the tbi the fuel pump/spark.

sometime it helps to run ket to power and wait 20 secs then hit starter. this powers up the coil/relays and ecu checks for signals then has a instant start up most times. LOL! most times.

thanks for the input.... my problem now is find a good ecm at a reasonable price... I live out in the middle of nowhere and no yards around. Ebay has them for over 200.00 but i don't want to put that much out... I only gave 500. for it and had to put a rear end in (out of my 95). so i am trying to keep cost down for now because I am wanting to put my 98 5.2 mag that is built in it and then i will do the expensive stuff...
