On some Mopar musclecars there is a spring around the brakedrum on the outside. What is the purpose of this spring?
Dissipating heat from the drum?
Reducing vibration in the drum whilst under braking?
Eliminating "squeal"?

Please chime in if you know the answer(s).

I've always heard it's to prevent chatter...kinda like wrapping a drum with a rubber belt while turning it in a brake lathe.

Frank Badalson/Roger Gibson sell them.

it does nothing.if it did you would still see it today on cars.just another over engineering feat.

Cut a brake drum on a lathe without wrapping it...

Your question will be answered...

For the .06% of society that understands that.....
Otherwise, what is the purpose of it?

The drum will chatter without wrapping it. The cutter will bounce and not cut the drum smoothly.

I only remember seeing them on the drums with the big bell flair on them. I always figured it was for squeal too.

Squeal and chatter are pretty much the same thing....resonance is a better descriptive word.

It is a resonance damper, for noise / vibration reduction.
