If you swap out a 383 long block to a 440 long block what would you need to change on the engine to make it all work??

I know the manifold would be different but would all the other parts interchange. Like motor mounts, pulleys, power steering pump?? ect....
Thanks!!!
Stu

Every thing should be the same. Check 440SOURCE.com and look into the stroker kits for the ultimate 383 sleeper. Keep the 383!

Only things I can think of are the intake manifold and the distributor. If there are headers on the 383 then may not work with the 440 because of the height and width difference of where the headers bolt to the heads. A possible clearance issue.

Exhaust may have to be massaged (then again, you've done that a lot). Like said the distributor is different as is the intake, but the rest is a bolt-in.

Oh the headers may not fit??

its not that they won't "bolt up" obviously, but you are pulling them up and out.

so if you barely cleared something above them before, they will probably hit now.

intake manifold. valley pan metal intake gasket. (2) fore/aft metal strip pieces that secure the valley pan gasket. dist. The nominal (on paper) height of the "V" will be ~.745 (3/4") higher on the RB than on the B so the head ports which are the header mounting locations will be raised upward and outward at a 45 deg angle roughly that amount. If my pythagorean math is correct a .745" height increase at the V at a 45 angle is a .527" vertical height increase (air cleaner to hood) all else being the same which it likely wont be (diff manifold type etc). The threaded bosses on the front of the heads will also be raised .745" at a 45 angle so the alt on one side and PS on the other side will likely take diff brackets & I think some alt flat triangle trackets have 2 holes to take care of that and the AC brackets are different. Sounds worse than it is & I'd want that 440 in there. Stu I never could get the hang of hand sharpening drill bits so I bought a drill doctor. Now if I can get the instructional disc with it to open I can get something done about my 200 dull drill bits. Has the wedding in Grand Island taken place? How'd the trunk lock problem turn out?

Ok, guys thanks for the advice and i think the stroker idea is a better alternative.

I hope the drill doctor works for you but if all else fails and you cant get the disc to open just ship them to me and i will sharpen them all for you!!

The trunk lock was a piece of cake until i had to put the retaining clip on the cylinder. I want to know who has hands small enough to get inside the access holes...Took me like 20 minutes of messing around until i got a pair of needle nose vice grips to stay on that sucker!

I'd get a 400 block & stroke it. It'd be a B like the 383 so everything external would stay the same which'd get you up & going quicker. An offset ground 440 crank in the 400 is 470 cubes

Ultimately what i am looking for is a super reliable engine that runs on pump 91 and has enough poop to get out of it's way. I want to be able to drive it car all over the country someday and not worry. So i will sacrificial HP for dead reliability.

I'd think a mild 400 stroker should have enough poop. I mean, you already made it down here so I'd say you aren't too far off from reaching your goal.

Well even though my poor old original 383 is running fine it's starting to use a quart of oil every couple hundred of miles or so and its fouling the rear plugs right as soon as i clean them. I am doing a rebuild soon i would expect.

You could do a rebuild... OR... remove it, bag it, find a place in or next to the garage bar to put it, and install a 400 stroker.

One adv of rebuilding an eng on the side is as you know it'll minimize your down time. I'm (slowly) doing a 451 (440 crank/400 block) & it's a simple/proven/reliable deal (440 crank/440 rods/stroker pistons required). If I was to start over I would have had the crank offset ground to go to 470 cubes while they were turning down the mains and turning the counterweights. Andy got 550 horse out of his (470) with good heads & cast iron 68-70 B body HP manifolds

I was also thinking of going with some aluminum heads and roller rockers too.

I did the 450 stroker kit from muscle motors for my 383, dropped right in and runs great. Used source heads.

Say no to 'offshore'...

What's wrong with a stock 383 with a few tweaks???

Make it pump-gas compatible...

Maybe a little port clean-up...

Good induction, and exhaust...

Dial it in and drive...

The headers should work no problem if they are decent ones.Ive done a few and all the headers worked. One I had to ding the one tube just a bit to clear one grease fitting.Rocky
