Got a 2003 CTD that still has the original lift pump next to the fuel filter. I can't believe it is still alive after 200K. Anyway, I need to upgrade. Looks like Fass is good and $S:

And Airdog is good and $S:

From what I can tell the frame rail mount is a good thing as the pump is not shaken up like at the factory location. I've read mixed reviews about the in-tank "upgrade."

I'm thinking about a Smarty Jr in the future. Reliability is critical. What do you recommend? Thanks in advance!

I bought a 98.5 3500 with an aftermarket pump in the stock location and it was dead. Apparently the reason the city found it in a service station parking lot. Charged up a battery and it is showing 324K miles. I got an aftermarket pump from Rock Auto to be able to hear it run. If my back will let me install it. I am still running on the cheap on this thing including the replacement lift pump I am at $1400.

I don't know about the bigger AirDog pumps, but their Raptor pumps are crap. Put one of their kits on my '01...had to replace the pump after a year. It was under warranty though. After a year and a half on the 2nd pump, the fuel pressure is fluctuating again.

$1300 for a CTD? That's a steal!
Thanks for the input. I'll just find a FASS and call it good.

Supposedly Air Dog is in transition. I'd wait for some positive reviews before I went that direction.

You might skip to the last page unless you just want to read over 500 posts, most complaining about Air Dog.

I'd go with the Mopar in tank conversion kit without a doubt. At least you're in the desert and "IF" you choose to go the "on the frame rail" route it won't be subjected to snow/rain like the few I've replaced that corroded up and failed. I prefer the in tank pump. It's a proven unit, keeps cool submerged in the tank, no splicing fuel lines, electrical is a clean, sealed, easy install.

Are you talking about the same dealer installed in-tank pump that was put on my '01. Those things are just as bad or worse than the original block mounted pumps. 3-5 psi at idle, 0 as soon as you step on the throttle.

original post involves an 03. apples and oranges to your 01 fuel system.

I understand that, but I was under the impression that they still used the same type of lift pumps though. Or is the in-tank pump you're referring to different than the dealer installed pump that was on my '01? Only reason I bring it up is b/c mine was junk and I've never seen or heard anyone said they were good pumps?

just an observation from working on these things for years... In 05 Dodge put the lift pump in the tank. I was thinking, "great....now I'm going to have to drop the tank when these pos things fail".....but they didn't, and it was about that time that the "retrofit kits" came out which covered the trucks back to 98.5. With the common rail trucks (03 up) I've never seen a related part failure when the lift pump failed....the truck simply quit running, and "if" I've replaced five of them over the years I'd be surprised.

On the 98.5 to 02 VP44 equipped trucks.....different deal. It's pretty common knowledge that if you starve that pump you can possibly damage it. I have an 01, and my first injection pump died at 77K. This was with the factory installed lift pump that was still putting out 12-14 psi at idle, drops to maybe 3 at the hardest of pulls. I still run a stock lift pump to this day. I swapped the original out in 08 as it was starting to leak which later I found a tsb from Cummins for replacing the top diaphragm (gasket) due to ULSD. Bought a gask from a Cummins dealer and it's now my spare pump. I did procure a in tank pump when my truck was still under warranty, but it's still in the box. IIRC most of the time the idle psi with those was 9-11 and I don't ever remember seeing them drop to zero, close, but never zero. I'm not a believer of having "14psi to the VP at all times to save it".... I've replaced injection pumps with about every fuel system under the sun. FASS does back their product up "IF" it's installed correctly, but you're looking at alot of down time as you have to have the pump removed and then sent to them for inspection. Most I've replaced were trucks from the north that had road salt corrosion and the motors failed, thus my disliking of them.

Thanks for the good info. The FASS with good filters was significantly cheaper than the dealer "in tank" conversion, so I installed the FASS (T D08 095G) Titanium Series Fuel Air Separation System. Rust is a non-issue in the desert so I hope it will last. Anyway, its quiet and it solved my "long crank" issue.
