Wondered if there was anybody who can replace the factory rivets in my 74 Charger front ashtray? I had it replated and instead of doing my usual routine of investing a large amount of money, time and brain space to do the job myself, I decided I want to just poke it in a box and send it to somebody who can do it for me. I know Instrument Services say they can do it but I can't get a response from them and wondered if there was somebody else. Any leads appreciated.

Heres a link to a thread I did when I refinished mine, maybe it will give you enough info to decide if you'd like to tackle it on your own.

Good luck whatever you decide.

I had a tough time finding a local person to do the tube rivets on my ash tray restoration. I finally got tired of looking around and just used regular pop rivets. It isn't concours correct but I don't smoke and most of the time it's going to be closed anyway

FWIW I didn't take mine apart when I refinished my dashes. You can not tell it was repainted.

Aren't they smash rivets? Those are easy to do by hand.

I threw caution to the wind and just bought the rivets and the tools to install them . To be honest they weren't that bad really.
rivetsonline.com is where I got them ????

BUT,
If I just had the one to do,,, like mentioned I would just send it to Mike Mancini above.

I bought this rivet clincher that tonka truck restorers use. My recollection is that I paid about half this not too many years back. I also at one point found a place on line to buy the different dies cheaper than the fellow was offering them on ebay. This is nice tool in that it lets get in some tight spots that you can't get with an arbor press or standard brake lining riviter.

Interesting tool, basically someone took a set of heads from a squeeze riveter and modified it for a c-clamp.

Pro's
1 purchase
Self contained
Great for squeezing 1/8 inch tube rivets within the depth of the c-clamp throat

Con's
Only does 1/8 inch rivets
Limited to depth of c-clamp throat (unless you make or modify a c-clamp)
A bit pricey at $90

IMO buying the rivet sets is cheaper and more versatile in the long run, though this is another option for someone looking to do refurbishment if it suits your needs.

I also have the correct tools for doing rivets on the heater boxes, ash trays and other various semi-tubular rivets on the cars. Pm me and I can give a price on installing rivets.

Cost so far. Shipping to and back $30 and Mancini cost to install with rivets, $30. $60 total. Age is probably catching up with me, because this used to scream, NEW TOOL PURCHASE!, but now it sounds like GITERDUN! And who would have thought I would get excited over a restored ASHTRAY! I need a new hobby maybe I can learn to crochet at the home...........
