One of the remote control keys on my 2007 Jeep Commander has stopped working. I have a friend that has a brand new key blank that has never been programmed, but the dealer here wants $75 to program it to the lock. Is there a way to do it myself?
Some see the glass as half empty, some see the glass as half full. I just drink straight out of the bottle.

Not sure on your car--but on a ford product, you must hook up a laptop to the data link connector, then let the computer i.d.. the car, then go through a ten minute access delay then program the key if you only have one key-- There may be another way to do it such as a locksmith-- total takes about 45 minutes or so to do the job from the time the order is pulled till done.. kevin

With a scanner they hook up to computer of the vehicle.
Back to the other question, did you replace the battery in your original, if it went dead and you replace it it generally holds the program.
Careful, your character's showing!

2007 Jeep Commander "There is no onboard programming procedure for this vehicle. This vehicle requires special equipment be connected to the vehicle to program the keyless remote."

Ya need to bribe a tech that moonlights and everyone needs to keep a tight lip & no witnesses.
But beware... I saw a tech once try to undercut his employer. The potential customer complained and the dealership fired the tech.
I had a friend do my LHS keys late one Saturday. Paid him cash.

Need to use WiTech scan tool and obtain the 4 digit pin number from Chrysler to program. The security (skim) part of the key and keyless entry programs at the same time. Takes about 5 minutes.

Whoops, re-read the post. N/m. My suggestion does not apply. Sorry.

$75 is cheap. It would cost twice as much here to do the same thing. There are two layers of security here. One for the chip in the key and another for the lock/unlock buttons. The highest security is for the chip. Since it is entirely passive, I doubt your chip is bad. I am thinking it will start and run the car just fine once you are inside. This is the part you need to allow a third key to be made without the computer. The second part is where you have the failure. The fob portion is a lot less secure. Fobs can be cloned by locksmiths without computers. Even some parts houses can clone working fobs. Check and see if a locksmith can clone a fob for you to put on your dead key to get you inside and start the car with your broken key. You will look so 2003 with a separate fob but lot less light in the wallet. Craig
