Putting together a 440 for a friends '70 Challenger. The shortblock was built sveral years ago and consists of the following parts:
'70 440 block .030
TRW L2295 pistons (yes, boat anchors, but what we have)
Eagle H-beams
Mellings std volume pump
.010/.010 forged crank
ARP main studs
balanced rotating assembly

Heads are Edelbrock 84cc
Comp Cams 1.5 roller rockers

Will this following cam be a good choice for a fair weather cruiser? Car is a 4-spd with 3.55 suregrip.

It's an old stock Engle HL26 solid lifter grind. Found these specs on the web: 254* Dur. @ .050" and .513" lift with 1.5 rockers

4.10s would be better, as long as he has headers and a good intake and carb yes. It will have a pretty lopey idle and it will be a screamer.

It should be good cam for a mid to high 11 second time slip, if he's not fussy and doesn't want a stock idle it'll work. If he really just wants a crusier I'd go smaller. Any idea on the LSA? I'm assuming 108.

Thanks for the reply Matt. The intake is an Eddy Perf RPM and the carb is an 850 Holley DP. TTI 1 7/8" headers and 2.5" exhaust. The gears are the one thing he won't change out. He likes to be a freeway flyer

According to the second response from Chris at Engle, the LSA is 108 or 110.

This is the first response from Engle tech:

Hi,

that is a big block chevy grind . It is .252’ duration at .050”.342” cam lift .292’ running duration .513”lift

The lash is .018”int .020”ex cold for Iron heads Chris

I'm no guru when it comes to cams and specs, but a friend of mine has a similar setup on his car, and he went with a Lunati vodoo 60303. It has a nice little lope to it, but drives great. Get a little heavy footed and it wakes up real nice.

Is the 2295 the DOMED piston ??? If it is his compression ratio is going to require him to mix in race gas .

Yes it is John. From what I have read here, seems they don't make nearly the advertised cr.

My '71 GTXs 440 has the same pistons and with the original 346 heads (done by Valley Head Service in CA, years ago) and stamped 87cc, along with a Racer Brown ssh-25 cam, I didn't really have any detonation issues running 93 octane, unless I lugged it up a hill in fourth.

I'd plug all the specs into Kieth Blacks calculator & see what SCR you have & post the number here. You said you wanted a mild cruiser so I'd listen to what the cam guys who have already posted here have said & go with something mild(er)

I run Ross 12.5 domes in my 440.Stealth heads and Comp .588 cam.I only need to mix race gas if Im going to run it hard or at the track. It runs 93 pump gas almost all the time.Just cant get into it hard or the valves will clatter.Rocky

Call Scott at straightline. I ran his 540ish grind and it ran real good. As for compression You could always go w/ a cometic gasket. This motor has .057 gaskets. I'm also running a comp cams 588 solid roller.

Regardless of the cam I hope the stock valve notches have been recut. As built they are way small and you will have issues in the outside corners of the cuts. That will limit cam choice.I have used them many times, with 86 cc heads and no milling of the block could be as low as 10.3. With 79cc heads and .000 deck they are easily can be 13-1.

Cam wise,I have had great success with the Voodoo line.60304 would be a very good choice.

How far in the hole are those 2295's? I have run 268 at 050 with the 2295's. Mine where around 030 down. The heads where 906s, milled about 020 with Manley 214 pro flows. That motor was built 30 years ago so I'm a little fuzy the the exact specs. Oh and with that 4spd, if you put tires that will allow you to hook 'n book, you'll bust that 8.75

No, they are box stock and the heads are 84cc. The block only had a clean-up cut.

I'm going to check the deck height this weekend. I'm betting the flat part is way lower than .030. And, he plans on a Dana soon

With a MT, 3.55's and mostly street driving, I'd suggest a smaller cam - 235ish @.050 intake duration - may make the car more fun with mid range torque and "reasonable" manners.

Except the big cam may help in dealing with high CR and avoiding detonation. Agree as others have posted, figuring the "real" CR and PV clearances matters a lot.
