Then I went to external belt driven oil pumps with a wet sump pan because it is more reliable than a screwed in pickup or welded in like mine were pickups.
Are you running this setup in your STREET CARS ??

No but a 500+hp hemi should be able to put down some power and maybe shake the tires even on the street?

Are you suggesting that the OP, and anyone else reading, run a belt driven oil pump system ?

i doubt he is, just relating what he did.
i have no problems putting another pickup in there and carrying on. i may use the milodon pickup that i got in vegas as opposed to the stock replacement though. i still haven't got to it, but i suspect i'll see some marks on the bottom inside of my pan, showing that when the engine fell/dropped onto the pan it tweaked the pickup a bit, and just took this much time to do its thing.

No I'm not, as the hemi already has a external oil pump unlike the BBC where there are many advantages to a external oil pump.

Engine autopsy without any clear cause of failure is the worst. This is the lesser of the evils. By Easter you should be ripping gears again, huh?

Mick, that sure does not seem like enough of the pickup tube is engaged in the block. It looks like only about four threads. You may want to chase the threads with the proper tap.
Wow, have to Still you dodged a big bullet

i'll have to ask my friend where the crack was to make sure. i think there was another 1-2 threads in the block where it broke off.
i will look into this. it is clear though that the problem was the pan hitting the pickup. there is a nice imprint of the pickup on the bottom of the pan.
how many threads is a separate issue, so i will check into that...
